For this assignment, I planned to recreate the face of one of my cats as a stuffed toy of a bigger size.
The 2D shape and half-done cat face.
The done 3D cat face with cotton stuffed inside.
This is the small version of the face of my cat, and I made it first for the purpose of practice. All the sewing process was made by my hands. Its face and ears are using back stitch, its face is whip stitch and its eyes are fresh knots.
This is the very rough draft for my cat face of a bigger size, and I marked out the colors of the fabrics I planned to use and the processes I decided to use for sewing.
These are the materials I used for my cat face stuffed toy.
The front.
The back.
The hand-sewing part.
The machine-sewing part.
The invisible stitch (hand-sewing).
When I was making the cat face, I found myself often bumping into difficulties. For the hand-sewing part, I struggled the part of making an end knot at first, but after I went to find some tutorials I found it became easier for me. Besides, when making invisible stitches, I found it hard for me to pull the thread hard and really make the seam invisible. My professor later told me that might be due to the texture of the thread and suggested I try another sort of thread, which I think I would definitely try next time. For the machine-sewing part, I first spent a long time looking for detailed steps on how to put thread into the sewing machine since I forgot to review the steps after the sewing machine workshop... Then during the process where I was using the sewing machine, I found sometimes the line would be out of the original track because I didn't change the direction of the fabric in time (I also found it hard to move the fabric probably because this type of non-woven fabric is harder than others). But luckily after I flipped the fabric inside out, the mistakes couldn't be seen. In conclusion, I would say this is a fun experience enabling me to focus on the sewing process, but I skill right now is undoubtedly not that good, so much more practice will be needed if I want to make a more perfect project! :)
