Scheduling Office Hours
Please devote one to two hours a week to meet with students outside of class. The Department will request your “office hours” at the beginning of the semester, which we will then post for students. Adjunct faculty members are encouraged to use our space on the 8th floor (Room 842) to hold office hours.
Providing Student Feedback
It is very important that students receive feedback on their class performance at regular intervals. If your first returned grade is a mid-term grade, please make sure they receive this grade in a timely fashion. It is also very helpful to provide comments on papers and exams. Students expect explanation for the grades they receive and they value your suggestions for improvement.
Your Absence from Class
All class sessions must be met. If an emergency arises and a class must be canceled, please notify the Department by calling the front desk at 212-998-5635 or call Rebecca directly at 212-992-9497. If at all possible, you should also email your class through your Brightspace site or Faculty Center to notify all students of your absence.
Student Absence from Class
Please have a clear attendance policy detailed on your syllabus. More than two unexcused absences should constitute a reduction in a student’s participation or overall grade. Excused absences include religious holidays and health issues. If a student consistently misses class or if a student remains on your course roster but has never attended the class, note this via NYU Connect or email comm.advisors@nyu.edu to notify the Department’s undergraduate advisement staff or mcc.graduate@nyu.edu to reach the graduate advisement staff.
Class Rosters
NYU Classes and Faculty Center will provide you with an up-to-date roster of your students, as class lists change frequently during the first two weeks of the semester. Students on an active waitlist must be permitted to attend your class during the first week, but only if space allows for it. Please see page 10 for more information on waitlists.
Social Networking and Facebook Guidelines
NYU’s Office of Equal Opportunity has established proposed guidelines for instructors on the use of social networking and Facebook. We leave it to your discretion to adhere to the following:
Keep official course activities in official online tools (NYU Classes, Faculty Center) and not on Facebook.
Never require students to participate in Facebook or have Facebook participation influence a course grade. (An exception might be for a class assignment that uses Facebook for research purposes such as statistical analysis of Facebook data).
Do not “friend” or “follow” students on any social media platform. Do not pressure students to friend or follow the professor (such as repeated mention of a faculty profile in class).
