By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Sight read, improvise, and transcribe rhythms that incorporate syncopation at the subdivision level in simple time.
Demonstrate further proficiency in sight sight-singing and improvising melodies that incorporate chromatic embellishing tones, skips within I, V, V7, ii, IV, and the cadential six-four.
Transcribe chord progressions and melodies that include cadential 6-4 chords and inversions of V7 in longer examples from the repertoire.
Rhythmic Improvisation (16th-Note Syncopation & Rests in Simple Time): Select a time signature (2/4, 3/4, or 4/4), then improvise rhythms using the rhythm grid below. Use the rhythmic syllables specified by your instructor and conduct while you improvise. For additional practice, take turns doing call and response. Improvise one measure using a neutral syllable; the class responds by singing back the rhythm with correct rhythmic syllables to ID the rhythm.
Melodic Improvisation (Chromatic Embellishing Tones): Continued practice with cadential six-four chords.
Chord Grid: I - IV - Cad64 - V - I
Chord Players: I - IV - Cad64 - V - I (in AbM) or i - iv - Cad64 - V - i (in Gm)
Melodic Sight-Reading: Continue practice sight-reading melodies in the section "Leaps/Skips to or from Chromatic Tones."
Rhythm Sight-Reading: Sight-read rhythms in the sections "16th Note Rests" and "Ties with 16th Notes."
Continued practice transcribing longer examples that include tonic prolongation with inversions of V and V7 chords, and cadential six-four chords. (See units 4-1, 4-2, and 4-3.)
