By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify chromatic scale degrees with chromatic solfège and sing a chromatic scale using these syllables.
Listen to examples from the repertoire and aurally identify suspensions and stepwise chromatic embellishing tones by type.
Transcribe melodies that incorporate suspensions and stepwise chromatic embellishing tones.
Sight sing and improvise melodies that incorporate suspensions and chromatic embellishing tones approached and left by step.
Demonstrate further proficiency in sight reading, improvising, and transcribing rhythms that include all dotted 8th and syncopated patterns in compound time.

Melodic Sight-Reading: Sight read through the melodies in the section "Chromatic Tones Approached & Left by Step."
Before you begin, sing through the chromatic scale using solfège. Discuss the different syllables associated with ascending or descending chromatic pitches and how this applies to melodies when sight-reading. (See the "References" section above for visual aids.)
Rhythm Sight-Reading: Continue practice with rhythms that incorporate other dotted 8th note patterns and syncopation in compound time. See the section "Other Dotted 8ths."
Aural Anthology (Chromatic Emebellishing Tones): Practice transcribing melodies that incorporate stepwise chromatic embellishing tones. See the section "Chromatic Tones Approached & Left by Step."
Aural Anthology (IV, ii chords): Continued practice transcribing examples with IV and ii. See the section "Transcription: I, IV, V in root position" and "I, IV, V (with inversions)."
Theory Anthology (Predominants): Continued practice transcribing progressions that incorporate ii, ii6, and IV as part of predominant function. See the section "T - PD - D - (T)"
