By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Aurally identify examples of perfect authentic, imperfect authentic, and half cadences in examples from the repertoire.
Describe strategies for hearing and transcribing basslines.
Listen to examples from the repertoire and sing the bassline back along with the recording or by memory.
Demonstrate further proficiency sight-reading rhythms that incorporate other beat note values in compound time (e.g. 6/4, 9/16).
Read the following from Foundations of Aural Skills (Timothy Chenette)
The Improvisation Train: Practice improvising phrases that include tonic skips that end with a convincing authentic or half cadence. Discuss phrasing, melodic direction and contour, and melodic and rhythmic considerations for the cadences.
Here are some sample backing tracks: Rock | Funk | Slow Blues | Waltz
Melodic Sight-Reading: Continued review of sight-singing and with melodies in other time signatures. (See the section "Other Time Signatures")
Rhythm Sight-Reading: Continued practice with examples that include compound meters with beat units other than the dotted quarter (e.g. 6/4, 12/16). (See the "Compound Meter" sections).
Recognizing Basslines: Try the activity from the reading "Paying Attention to Bass Lines." Listen to a few phrases of each example 2 or 3 times. Sing the bass part back along with the recording or from memory. Transcribe the bassline.
Aural Anthology: Identify examples of perfect authentic, imperfect authentic, and half cadences in examples from the repertoire. (See the first section, "Authentic & Half Cadences.")
Theory Anthology: See examples of cadences in the theory anthology for additional aural ID practice.
