By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Evaluate their level of proficiency in transcribing melodies and determining the key of a melody, pinpoint areas that need additional work, and describe strategies discussed in the reading and in class for building proficiency.
Outline a personal plan for improving dictation skills over 2 weeks.
Demonstrate further proficiency in sight-reading rhythms that incorporate other beat note values in simple time (e.g. 2/2, 4/16, 3/8, 4/2).
Review the following (as needed) from Foundations of Aural Skills (Timothy Chenette) to review strategies for transcription:
Continued practice with improvisation from Unit 1-1.
Melodic Improvisation with Tonic
Exercises from "Improvisation with Tonic" (Cleland & Dobrea-Grindahl, Developing Musicianship through Aural Skills, pp. 73–75).
The Improvisation Train: Practice improvising with the improvisation train exercises introduced in Unit 1-1.
Here are some sample backing tracks: Rock | Funk | Slow Blues | Waltz
Sight Singing: Continued review of sight-singing and with melodies in other time signatures. (See the section "Other Time Signatures")
Rhythm Sight-Reading: Continued practice with cut time and beat units other than quarter notes (e.g. 2/2, 3/8, 4/16) in simple time.
Aural Anthology: Practice transcribing melodies that include tonic skips. Add examples in cut time and 3/8 to practice working with other time signatures.
Review strategies as a class for melodic and rhythmic transcription and how to determine the key of a melody by comparing the tonic to a stable pitch.
