Fall 2025 Registration
For Continuing MA Students
For Continuing MA Students
Fall 2025 course schedules will become available Monday, March 24, and the registration period for continuing students will begin on Monday, April 21. This means you have a month to plan your Fall courses and also get cleared for registration.
Remember, you will not be able to register unless the advisor's hold is removed from your account (see instructions below).
Registration will not begin until April 21. Every student is assigned an enrollment time via Albert based on the number of credits you have completed.
Check "Registration Status" via your Student Center on Albert to determine the exact date and time that you will be able to enroll.
Students need to take four area of study courses to graduate (16 credits total), with ideally 12 credits from within one Area of Study. This is a guiding principle for you to consider as you plan your courses. We understand that courses in each area may not be offered every term, and it is encouraged that you choose courses related to your research interests, which likely falls within one area. While you will still be able to graduate even if you end up taking classes in overlapping areas of study, we encourage students to develop a sense of focus when planning your coursework.
Use this program plan to help track your credits and guide your decision making
Not sure which class you took was in which area? See the full list of area of study designations.
Keep in mind that all 3000 level MCC courses are reserved for doctoral students, and instructor approval is required for MA students to enroll. Please email the instructor directly for approval and then forward the email to MCC.Graduate@nyu.edu for registration support.
MA students need to complete one research methodology course as part of your degree requirements.
The department will be offering the following research courses this Fall:
MCC-GE 2145 Intro to Methods in Media Studies
MCC-GE 2142 Critical Video
Not interested in these courses? Keep in mind that you can take research methods courses from other departments. See here for a list of sample research method courses.
Should I "shop" around for classes?
We know when students are considering several courses, some have enrolled in more than they planned to take. We ask students to refrain from doing so and to only register for the number of classes they intend to take to allow for others to enroll, including incoming students. This also helps us to manage enrollment to make sure everyone gets the classes they need.
If you are currently waitlisted for a class, please know that we are at the beginning of a long registration process and there will be changes between now and the start of the next semester. That said, if you are currently on a waitlist, you will notice movement on the waitlist particularly near the first two weeks of class. It's good practice to keep checking back on Albert for any changes in enrollment.
Students are encouraged to:
set up swaps while you're on the waitlist
enroll in electives from across the University
consider MCC PhD seminars (MCC-GE 3XXX). Interested students should reach out to the instructor directly for permission.
consider approaching faculty regarding independent study projects, which can be registered for variable credits
An important part of your fall semester planning will involve your culminating project as you advance into your second year in the program. You should plan around the anticipated credits and timing of your culminating project. Remember, the culminating seminars are variable credits, meaning they can range between 0-4 credits depending on how you'd like to schedule your remaining semester(s).
For example, if you plan on graduating in the fall and have 12 remaining credits, you can take two classes (8 cr) and a culminating project class (writing seminar/ media projects, thesis) for 4 credits.
OR, if you have 11 credits remaining, you can take two classes (8cr), and then adjust your culminating course to 3 credits. You can designate the number of credits based on what makes the most sense for your remaining credits.
What if you want to graduate in the Spring? Dependending on the culminating project, you may be eligible for Full Time Equivalency, that allows you to spread out your remaining 12 credits across two semesters. Each culminating option would have different eligibility requirements so please see details and more information on the culminating page of the MA Handbook. Or, schedule a one-on-one advising appointment to discuss further.
Note: You won't be able to register for the culminating courses on your own. We will email you an access code for your approved culminating project some time in late May/June. You should submit your proposed schedule for any other classes you intend to take for the Fall.
Review your registration time in Albert.
Use the MCC program of study to plan your fall schedule.
Take into consideration your culminating experience and the number of credits you'll need, particularly if you are an international student (see section below).
Fill out the registration clearance form at the bottom of this page.
Advising appointments are optional. We're always happy to answer quick questions from our MCC.Graduate email, or you can schedule a one-on-one advising appointment with Winnie Wu or Christian Daru via NYU Connect.
All students will receive a response from an advisor after completing the Registration Form within 2-3 business days. *You don't need to email us, we'll clear and notify you upon receiving the form*
If you plan on taking fewer than 12 credits in your final 1-2 semesters, be sure to review the important links below:

Pro-Rating Scholarships- Does your Steinhardt scholarship require you to maintain full time status? If so, review this information for instructions on how to maintain your scholarship when enrolling in fewer than 12 credits in your final year!
Domestic students must be enrolled in at least 4.5 credits in order to be eligible for financial aid. Please plan your courses accordingly if you need aid.
