Overarching Conceptual Lens: Sustainable Community
All Secondary Two students will offer the Interdisciplinary Studies over a period of 5 weeks starting from Term 2 weeks 7 to 10 and Term 3 weeks 1 in 2018. As with Secondary One, the Interdisciplinary Studies is designed to enable students to begin to deliberate and solve real world problems using the knowledge, skills and thinking taught in various disciplines/subjects from languages and the humanities to maths, science, art and music. This is part of the NYGH’s total curriculum and instructional experience which is rigorous and enriched to ensure an all-round development in the 5 domains of moral 德, cognitive 智, physical 体, social 群 and aesthetics 美. At the same time, it provides students with an experience that is authentic, personalised and relevant. It also enables students to make meaningful connections, have positive engagement and be of service to the larger community.
In the context of this IDS and sustainable community, the focus is
The quality of life stems from a state of complete physical, mental and socio-emotional well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
As such, the scenario below provides a platform to demonstrate how the quality of life of a specific community can be improved and the ideas or innovations can be massed produced to sustain that community.
There is an upcoming Innovative Entrepreneurship Fair 2018: Sustainable Community. This Fair is inviting startup companies with innovative ideas to exhibit their prototypes in view of attracting investments so that the prototype can be massed produced to make it affordable for the targeted group. This Fair will be looking at innovations[1] to improve the lives of people in society in the four areas of mobility, health, entertainment and environment. Your ideas should target to enable a sustainable community to flourish.
[1] Innovation involves deliberate application of information, imagination and initiative in deriving greater or different values from resources, and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products.
Given the focus on quality of life, you begin by thinking how you can improve the quality of life for the group of people that you served in community education. Use the following generalisation to guide you :
Sustainable communities continuously adjust to improve the quality of life for its residents in areas of mobility, health and entertainment, while preserving the environment’s ability to support it.
Besides identifying the needs of your target community, you will have to ideate and determine a solution and create a prototype that would best meet their needs either in the areas of mobility, health, entertainment or environment. You should also project your ideas within a time-frame of 5 to 10 years in the future to allow your ideas to become a reality which will include factoring time for testing your prototype until it is ready to be used by your target community. After completing your first concept prototype and testing it with your target community or relevant experts, your group will revise the prototype to feature enhancements before you put up your ideas at the Innovative Entrepreneurship Fair 2018: Sustainable Community.
