Copyright infringement is the act of exercising, without permission or legal authority, one or more of the exclusive rights granted to the copyright owner under section 106 of the Copyright Act (Title 17 of the United States Code). These rights include the right to reproduce or distribute a copyrighted work.
In the file-sharing context, downloading or uploading parts or whole copyrighted works without authority constitutes an infringement. NYFA students, faculty and staff are reminded that copyright infringement is a criminal offense and convictions may include jail time and/or severe fines, with a maximum penalty of $150,000 per instance in the United States.
NYFA Students, faculty and staff are forbidden from illegally downloading, uploading or sharing pirated material on campus, including, but not limited to, software, torrents, films and television shows. Failure to comply with the institution’s policy will result in disciplinary action.
