Shadows and Silhouettes

This assignment was easy, but also challenging in the sense that I didn't want to end up shooting the a bunch of similar photos. When I first started doing shadows, the only thing I found interesting was plant shadows so I had to get creative and find industrial, man-made shadows as well in order to get a variety of subjects. The same thing happened when I got to silhouettes because all my photos were landscape sunset type of shots, but I like shooting silhouettes a lot more than shadows. Silhouettes just look cooler to me. When I looked back at my basic composition photos, I saw I had shot a couple silhouettes back then without even realizing it but now that I went through this assignment I have a better grasp at properly shooting these kinds of photos.

This is one of my favorite shadow photos because I was able to incorporate the object creating the shadow without having it overpower the shadow. There's movement from left to right because the pipe leads the eye down to the shadow and the shadow connects to the door. The mostly neutral colored background makes the shadow a clear focal point.

For this photo, I made sure to frame the shadows with the plants making/surrounding them in order to bring a sense of balance to it. The green colors of the plants also give some nice vibrancy in contrast to the grays of the shadows and wall. However, the differing grays do give some cool value. There's a nice combination of positive and negative space, as well as geometric and organic shapes.

This is really cool because of the repetition of the gate pattern across the entire photo. It feels like the gate is moving the eye upwards toward the lamp post in the top left. The lines of the gate can actually be interpreted as going left or right which gives some cool contrast to the image. Overall, this photo has good rhythm and color contrast.
