January 2nd to February 28, 1970, at Kent State marked the first celebration of Black History Month. This month mainly was celebrated by students that attended HBCU colleges before it was officially recognized in 1976 by president Gerald Ford. Before Black History Month was established there would be Black History Weeks which was observed by Carter G. Woodsen also known as the “Father of Black History”. Today in America and in Canada, it is celebrated from the first of February to the first of March, but in other countries such as The UK and Ireland, it´s observed around October. This time is used as an opportunity to understand, respect, and honor black history, as well as pay tribute to those who have died fighting for it.

Celebrating Black History Month can happen in a plethora of ways such as supporting Black-owned businesses near you or donating/spreading awareness to black issues in your community. Another way it is frequently celebrated is by attending a Black History Month parade which consists of lectures, poems, short stories, and personal memoirs all led by black community members. Furthermore, a way to observe this month in Nevada is by shopping at the ¨All Black Farmers Market¨ hosted in Henderson or joining the sunrise library for a ¨Tune into African American Heritage Month¨ where you are able to appreciate and study old as well as modern music created by black people all around the world. Overall, a celebration is defined as ¨The action of marking one's pleasure at an important event or occasion¨, meaning that not all celebrations have to be lavish events and can be unique to your own circumstances. This also puts into perspective how the celebration of black lives shouldn´t be just a monthly activity as it barely scratches the surface of the appreciation felt towards such a marginalized community.
