For high school freshmen, there are several important things to know as you navigate your first year of high school:

1. **Academic Expectations**: Understand the academic expectations of high school, including course requirements, grading systems, and study habits. Freshmen should prioritize time management, organization, and effective communication with teachers to succeed academically.

2. **Extracurricular Opportunities**: Explore extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, and organizations. Participation in extracurriculars not only enriches the high school experience but also helps students develop leadership skills, make new friends, and explore their interests outside the classroom.

3. **Social Dynamics**: Be aware of social dynamics and peer pressure, and make choices that align with personal values and goals. Freshmen should seek out positive peer groups and supportive friendships while being mindful of the importance of inclusivity, respect, and empathy in their interactions with others.

4. **Resource Utilization**: Familiarize yourself with available resources and support systems within the school, such as counselors, tutors, academic advisors, and peer mentors. Don't hesitate to seek help when needed, whether academically, socially, or emotionally.

5. **Personal Responsibility**: Take ownership of your education and personal growth by setting goals, staying organized, and advocating for yourself when necessary. Freshmen should prioritize self-care, balance academics with extracurricular activities and hobbies, and cultivate healthy habits for overall well-being.

6. **College and Career Readiness**: Begin thinking about post-secondary plans and exploring college and career pathways early on. While it may seem premature, freshmen can benefit from researching colleges, scholarships, and career options, as well as building a strong academic and extracurricular record to support future aspirations

When and why will you meet with your school counselor?

You can request to meet with your counselor at any time during the school year.
Your counselor will schedule 2 meetings with you. One meeting in semester 1 only if you are in danger of failing class(es) and/or to create your graduation plan which includes all of the classes you will take over the next 4 years. Second meeting is in second semester to review the credits you have earned. In these meetings, the following are discussed and completed.

You will review and update your plan every year

The course of study you choose will be determined by what you want to do after high school
