Join a sport! A club! And get involved with our community partners
Colleges recruit students NOT only based on grades and GPA. Colleges also look at student athletes, students with leadership skills, students who volunteer their time and stand out by being UNIQUE and INVOLVED!
Get Good Grades - When colleges begin receiving your application and transcripts, the final grades posted will be from the end of your junior year
Get Recommended - Begin asking for letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, club advisors, anyone that knows how amazing you are as a student and/or participant.
College Admission Test Prep - What's your ACT score? Do you need to retake it for a higher grade? If you haven't taken it, this may be the time to begin studying for it. (Juniors take the ACT in February of their junior year)
Focus Your College Search - begin compiling a list of colleges you may be interested in. Choose your "top" schools and "back up" schools. Always consider location, size of school, cost and if there is anything unique that you are looking for (example - do you plan to play sports, make sure the school offers the sport you are interested in). Begin visiting college campuses.
Decide How to Pay for College - Create an account with a scholarship match engine such as goingmerry.com. Begin narrowing down what scholarships you want to apply to and how many scholarships you will apply to. Create a "brag sheet" that you can copy and paste from when applying.
Prepare for College Athletics - If you are an athlete, create your NCAA and/or NIAA account.
Keep Up Your Involvement - Sports, clubs, student government, school volunteering opportunities, anything that keeps you involved and will make you stand out, continue to participate!
Check in with your counselor at least once a semester to make sure you are on track towards graduation, towards the diploma you are working towards and meeting admissions requirements for the schools you plan to apply to.
