Visual design is all about creating and making the aesthetics of a product consistent. To create the aesthetic style visual designers work with fundamental elements of visual design. These elements and principles together form the building blocks of visual design, and a firm understanding of them is crucial in creating a visual design of any product.
The elements we will discuss are:
Lines (straight/curved/geometric/organic) – use these to create divisions, textures and shapes.
Shapes – use lines, different colors, etc. to create enclosed/self-contained areas.
Negative space/whitespace – use the blank area around a “positive” shape to create a figure/ground effect or calm the design overall.
Value – use this to set the relationship between lightness and darkness, typically through a light source to create shadows and highlights.
Color – use this to set the theme/tone and attract attention.
Texture – use this to define an object’s surface.
Activity Four: Visual Design Elements Analysis
Objective: To evaluate your understanding of key visual design elements (Lines, Shapes, Negative Space/Whitespace, Value, Color, Texture) and how they are used in design.
Part 1: Conceptual Understanding (30 points)
In this section, provide a detailed explanation for each of the following visual design elements. Explain their significance in design, how they affect the viewer's perception, and provide examples of their use in design. Explanation can be brief but should highlight the general concept of these elements.
Lines (5 points): Discuss the role of lines in visual design. Explain how different types of lines (e.g., straight, curved, diagonal) can convey different emotions or messages in a design.
Shapes (5 points): Explain the importance of shapes in design. Discuss how shapes can be used to create visual interest and convey meaning. Provide examples of designs that effectively use shapes.
Negative Space/Whitespace (5 points): Describe the concept of negative space or whitespace in design. Explain how it affects the overall composition and readability of a design. Provide examples of designs with effective use of negative space.
Value (5 points): Analyze the concept of value in design. Discuss how variations in light and dark can create depth and form in two-dimensional designs. Provide examples of designs that use value effectively.
Color (5 points): Discuss the significance of color in design. Explain how color choices can influence emotions, readability, and the overall impact of a design. Provide examples of designs with thoughtful color palettes.
Texture (5 points): Explore the concept of texture in design. Explain how texture can add depth and tactile qualities to a design. Provide examples of designs that incorporate texture effectively.
Submission Guidelines:
Submit your written responses (Part 1) typed on your website.
The principles we will discuss are:
Unity – use this to establish harmony between page elements, so they appear to belong together and users aren’t distracted by chaotic (e.g., misaligned) layouts.
Gestalt– use these principles of how people perceive objects to guide how users interpret your design.
Hierarchy – use placement, font, etc. to show importance.
Balance – use this to distribute elements evenly.
Contrast – use differences in color, etc. to accentuate elements.
Scale – use this to emphasize elements to establish importance or depth.
Dominance – use an object’s size, color, etc. to make it stand out.
Activity Five: Visual Design Principles Analysis
Objective: To evaluate your understanding of key visual design principles (Unity, Gestalt, Hierarchy, Balance, Contrast, Scale, Dominance) and how they are applied in design.
Application Assessment:
Create your own original design project based on the event of your choosing (Haunted House, Halloween Dance, and Spirit Week) that effectively incorporates both the visual design principles and elements. Explain your design choices, the intended message, and how each principle contributes to the design's success. Include a brief reflection on your creative process and how you contributed to your group.
I would recommend using Canva to create this.
