Thank you to....
North Kitsap Schools Foundation - $3,000 grant!
Richard Gordon PTA - $250!
Henery Hardware (Kingston) - Hardware to build beds!
The McDonald Family - Built the beds!
The McLaughlin Family - Donated soil!
Phase Zero - Complete:
Remove rotting beds for safety and to make room for new beds. Thanks to North Kitsap School District maintenance department's hard work over the summer, this is already done! :)
Phase One - Complete:
6 raised beds have been installed with built in irrigation. Thank you to the McDonald family for building the beds! The North Kitsap School District maintenance department brought water to the site, so we are ready to go.
Phase Two - In Progress:
Soil is coming! Sign up here if you would like to help fill the beds on Saturday, March 21st.
GOAL: Completion by March 2026. (Date extended due to scheduling.)
Phase Three - In Progress:
We will need five community volunteers (or groups of volunteers) to be responsible for each bed. They will be matched with a school grade level or club. The volunteers will ultimately be in charge of bed maintenance; level of student involvement will vary greatly by grade level.
We are also looking for additional volunteers to commit to helping with bed maintenance especially weeding. We are hoping for volunteers over the summer to allow more growing options.
Please consider signing up here or contact Melissa Baltzell to volunteer!
GOAL: Completion by March 2026.
Phase Four:
Time to make the garden come alive! This is where we will be looking for:
Things to make the garden run smoothly (donation of hoses for watering, bark or gravel to keep down weeds in the paths, material to cover beds when not in use, composting set-up, etc.)
Specific plants or seeds to match curriculum needs
Signage (identifying donors and volunteers as well as establishing community rules for students)
GOAL: Completion by May 2026.
Phase Five:
Things to make the garden a better space to read, write, or do math, such as seating.
Thing to make the garden more attractive.
Things to make the garden a better break or play space for kids.
Replaced fencing.
Maintenance and organization of the garden shed.
Add two additional beds if we have enough volunteers.
Add additional beds or plants to help with boggy areas.
GOAL: Completion in 2026-2027 school year.
Phase Six:
Move out beyond the garden to improve the outdoor education opportunities at Gordon. Maybe we will repair the gazebo, build a small moveable outdoor platform/stage, or set up a plant identification trail for Carpenter Lake!
