Main Goals for Students:
Briefly introduce students to ancient history in India and China.
Learn how geography can impact civilizations specifically in the Indus River Valley and near the Yellow and Yangtze rivers.
Learn about contributions from ancient Asian civilizations including holidays (Diwali and Chinese New Year,) paper, forms of writing, calligraphy, silk, philosophy (Confucius,) the Great Wall of China, and farming techniques.
Get an introduction to the major world religions Hinduism and Buddhism. (The focus is on how religion impacts history and culture.)
Get an initial understanding of geography in Asia and how to use a map.
Hear fiction and nonfiction read fluently.
Practice listening and remembering.
Practice responding to reading orally and in writing.
Build vocabulary for independent reading.
Tips to Extend Learning at Home:
Read fiction and nonfiction about ancient India and ancient China. The public library has a lot of options.
Talk with your child about your beliefs about religion. Compare and Contrast them to Hinduism and Buddhism.
Explore Asia on Google maps. Look for the Himalayas, the Bayankalas, the Indus River, the Ganges River, the Yellow River, The Yangtze River, India, and China. Notice which areas are more populated.
Plan a dream trip to India or China. Set up a budget, make an itinerary (looking at places you would go,) and plan a pack list.
Visit the Seattle Asian Art Museum. (Locations that touch on Asian American history will connect with our Immigration unit later in the year and may be helpful too.)
Cook traditional Chinese or Indian food or try it at a restaurant.
Try out writing calligraphy.
