ELA includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and other language skills. Second graders have three parts to their ELA instruction using the Amplify CKLA curriculum.
Background knowledge and vocabulary is developed during the knowledge portion.
Students work on basic reading and writing skills including fluency and spelling during the skills portion.
The individual needs of learners are addressed during WIN time.
In second grade, the priority is developing good reading fluency and basic comprehension.

The topics covered in second grade build on what was learned in first grade and prepare students for future years. Second grade units are:
Greek Myths
The War of 1812
Cycles in Nature
Westward Expansion
Insects
The U.S. Civil War
The Human Body: Building Blocks & Nutrition
Immigration
Fighting for a Cause
In second grade, during the "Skills" portion of our lesson, we:
Learn to decode (sound out) and spell more advanced patterns like "igh" for the long i sound.
Practice reading fluently. Students should be able to read at least 94 words per minute by the end of the year.
Work on answering questions about what we are reading.
Learn about grammar (like nouns and verbs) and writing conventions (like quotation marks and capitals.)
Practice writing narrative stories, paragraphs that give information about a topic, and paragraphs that share an opinion.
Students should practice their tricky spelling words at home until they are mastered.
WIN groups will start after we've had time to get to know and assess students. These groups are made based on the needs of our students (including the need for enrichment,) so the frequency of meeting, the length of the group, and what we work on varies. Students may work in groups with another second grade teacher.
When not in a group or meeting individually with the teacher, students practice their ELA skills individually during this time by reading, doing Boost, writing, or working on other at-level work.
Some students will receive daily support during this time from a LAP or special education reading group. If so, you will be notified.
Students can practice reading skills at their on pace through Boost. To get to Boost, students go to Clever, log in with the code in their home folder, select their teacher's page, and go to "Amplify." Typically students work on this during the school day.
Comprehension - Understanding what you read
ELA - English Language Arts (reading and writing)
Fluency - Being able to read the correct words at a good speed with appropriate expression
