There is a Principal Investigator (PI) Pathway which outlines the learning and development opportunities available, whether you're just considering PI to be a potential next step, you're already on the journey to becoming a PI, or you're already in role.
Please explore the pathway by selecting the Leading Research delivery option in the NW Doors information below.
There is also a section further down the page that highlights the learning objectives for some of these opportunities and the link to their pages on NIHR Learn - our Learning Management System.
Two specific courses we run regularly are Becoming a PI for those looking to gain a deeper understanding of what the role entails, and PI Essentials, which is aimed at developing the skills of those who are within their first 18 months of a PI role. You can find information about both courses under our North West PI Training page on NIHR Learn, including info about how to apply, and see what dates we currently have available.
A flyer that describes both workshops is also available here.

At the end of this 1.5 hour session you will be aware of the roles and responsibilities of being a PI and the expectations of the Sponsor in your role.
This National, interactive session has been developed for staff who are already acting as Principle Investigator but are new to the role (first 18 months). We offer 'Becoming a PI' before this stage.
The session is planned for 3 hours and will include the following learning outcomes:
Understand the PI’s responsibilities in leading the conduct of a study at a research site
Recognise what makes an effective PI and the importance of effective leadership in study identification, set-up, recruitment and conduct
Understand and reflect on the skills and behaviours required to be an effective PI
Know how to access support
Slideset generated with a L&D slant to guide established Principal Investigators who are looking for additional support.
Available through NIHR Learn here.
The objectives are:-
To offer suggestions for developing as a research delivery leader, (particularly as Principal Investigator or working towards becoming a Chief Investigator for a study Sponsor), using the model of Supporting / Delivering / Leading Research.
To describe regional & national PI training offers.
