Textile Design forms the core of the whole business of fashion. The rapidly expanding activities in the export and domestic sectors of the Indian apparel and home fashion industry demands professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material, which is responsible for 60-80% of the cost of the product. Textile design today is that strategic value adding activity that can make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an economically viable and profitable proposition.
Department of Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Patna campus started in the year 2013. The department is fully equipped with state of art equipment in Weaving Studio, Surface Design Studio, Textile Testing Lab and Digital Studio.
The Textile Design specialization equips students with broad-spectrum education in textiles while developing creativity, originality and design application in apparel and home fashion industries.
Content
As Textile Design students they receive inputs in design basics, elements and principle of design, colour theory, drawing and sketching skills, computer aided design skills, material handling, ideation and product development skills. They learn to designed and develop seasonal collection based on R&D / forecast for a range of products incorporating textures, prints, creative weaves, dobby, jacquard, carpets, embroideries and surface ornamentation.
They work in the crafts sector completing 4 weeks of craft research and documentation which includes spending 10 days with the crafts person in crafts cluster to research and document the craft.
They also have to design and developed a range of innovative craft based products in collaboration with the traditional crafts people and artisans. The products are based on modern sensibilities so as to incorporate traditional crafts in mainstream.
During the 8 weeks of industry internship, they learn the functioning and processes involved in designing of textile based products.
For the Graduation Project, they work with the sponsoring organisation for 16 weeks to develop two textile based collection.
Careers
The programme prepares students for a wide range of careers in textile mills and export houses, with fashion designers, design studios, mills, buying houses, hand loom cooperatives and buying agencies as Design or Fabric Managers, or work independently as Designers or Entrepreneurs.
The Class of 2017 and Class of 2018 comprised of 37 and 30 bright Textile Designers respectively. They are successfully serving the industry and making their presence felt in the textile design world.
