ABOUT:

  • One-year program that provides students an opportunity to learn how to respect, safely handle, and treat classroom animals

  • Students understand the various breeds and species of animals and are able to identify basic requirements for veterinary care and general health maintenance


STUDENT STUDY:

Diseases, symptoms, treatment and preventative measures for each species

Animal nutrition, genetics, behavior and training

Origin of various animal species

Handling, grooming and feeding

Basic first aid, calculating dosages and administering medications

Routine technical, maintenance and office functions

Professional and ethical standards


PREREQUISITES:

Completed Biology with an average of 80 (B) or higher.

Anatomy and Physiology

Intro to Health Occupations

Medical Terminology

CAMPUS LOCATION: Woodside Lane Campus, Newport News

SESSIONS: AM & PM

CLASS SIZE: 25 Students per session

CREDENTIALS: Small Animal Science and Technology iCEV/Elance Veterinary Medical Applications Certification

BIO:

Instructor of Veterinary Science at the Woodside Lane campus since it began in 2007

Graduate of Fairmont State College with an A.A.S. Degree in Veterinary Technology

Passed the state board exam to become a L.V.T (Licensed Veterinary Technician) in 1994

A wide range of clinical experience, including large and small animal practice, emergency and critical care practice and specialty surgical practice
