Step 3:
Complete the test for each lesson found at the sites above.
Step 4:
Print Certificates of completion for your records and Copy Certification links provided by FEMA and email to: jeff.brittingham@nhrec.org
Step 5:
Obtain a physical using the approved VA Department of Education form. New Horizons can also accept school physical forms obtained for sports related activities.
Emergency Medical Technician I & II
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – #8333/#8334
ABOUT:
One-year program that prepares students for the daily routine of dealing with crisis, trauma, hazardous materials, illness, injuries, mass casualty situations, disaster management, and terrorism awareness

Juniors who successfully complete Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) may be invited to return as a senior for EMT II (#8335)
Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a job growth of 24% from 2014-2024 (much faster than average)
STUDENT STUDY:
Medical, legal, and ethical issues
Anatomy and Physiology
Vehicle design and extrication
Hazardous materials
Patient assessment, treatment, and transport
Trauma, medical, and environmental incidents
Mass-casualty and disaster management
Scene safety and personal protection
Communications – written and oral
Pharmacology and ambulance operations
PREREQUISITES:
Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services has prerequisites for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training. For the complete list, contact the instructor.
Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language (at the 10th grade level).
Student must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the beginning date of the course.
Students must have no physical or mental impairment that would render them unable to perform all practical skills required.
Must not have been found guilty of any crime involving sexual misconduct, abuse, neglect, theft from or financial exploitation, any crime involving use, possession, or distribution of illegal drugs, and any felonies.
Students must complete Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 100,200,700,800 during the summer before class starts.
Students must also complete Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers during the first weekend of school.

Instructor level certifications in Basic Life Support, Advance Life Support, Trauma Life Support, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Mass Casualty Incident Management and Blood-Borne Pathogens.
