The beginning of the school year in Nursery has been full of smiles and joy. It has been lovely to welcome back returning families and extend a warm welcome to our new Nursery families. The children have loved making connections, seeing their teachers and forming new friendships. We have also been learning about the classroom routines and have had fun exploring the indoor and outdoor environment. The learners had the opportunity to meet their single subject teachers and have explored different areas of the school. During circle time, the children have shown great interest in a range of story books and have enjoyed singing songs together. We have also been co-constructing our class essential agreement and have focused on using our listening ears and taking care of our resources. A huge thank you for a fantastic turnout at our welcome evening. We look forward to the year ahead and supporting the children on their learning journey in Nursery.
This year Kindergarten has welcomed lots of new families. Our hub has been a hive of activity since we started back with the learners enthusiastically exploring their new environment. Already there has been so much to celebrate. Our young learners have demonstrated such resilience. From those who transitioned from Nursery to those who have just joined our community, we have seen the learners support each other and adapt to all of the new changes in their lives. Every day they have faced this with enthusiasm and energy and are becoming more and more confident in their new routines and schedules. We are so excited for the year ahead.
A warm welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year and to all our new and returning families. The learners have thoroughly enjoyed experiencing their new learning environment in the Year 1 hub, spending time on the Nexus RECIPE, and creating our Essential Agreements. They have been introduced to the first unit of inquiry of the year ‘Who We Are’, exploring all about themselves and their family. They have engaged in many learning engagements including self portraits, family trees and exploring numbers by creating graphs. The learners all should be very proud of the way they have settled into their new environment and we look forward to being risk takers, and experiencing new challenges in an exciting year ahead.
Welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year and to all our new and returning families. From day one, the Year 2 learners stepped into the hub, their eyes wide with wonder as they experienced the open learning environment and collaborative teaching and learning engagements. We could feel the excitement, and a touch of nervousness, as friendships were rekindled and as new friendships have started to form. The first few weeks have been a blend of introductions, icebreakers, and fun activities designed to build friendships and create a nurturing atmosphere. This has been a perfect opportunity to make connections through our Who we are unit of inquiry, which explores social, physical and emotional health. We have spent time familiarising ourselves with the Nexus RECIPE and connecting it to our rights and responsibilities in order to create our Essential Agreements. As the Year 2 learners become more familiar with the routines, we look forward to being curious risk takers in a fun filled year ahead full of exciting challenges.
What a great start to the school year Year 3 has had! Learners have been busy exploring their exciting new learning environment on Level 7 and settling into the new routines and expectations. Year 3 spent last week creating their own ‘Essential Agreements’ based on the Nexus RECIPE (Respect, Excellence, Communication, Integrity, Passionate, Enjoyable Environment) which will guide how we behave towards each other, learn and use the spaces appropriately. It has been an excellent starting point for us as we start digging into our first Unit of Inquiry, ‘People’s Actions Affect Others”. The jump from Year 2 to Year 3 is filled with many changes and the learners should be very proud of the way they have settled into their new environment and taken on the responsibility and independence of Year 3.
It has been a great pleasure to welcome our Year 4 learners back to school and we have been really pleased to see at how well everyone is settling into their new classes, making new friends and adapting to their new routines. We have been most impressed with the enthusiasm, energy and passion for learning shown. It is always exciting to have new learners join our classes and we extend a warm welcome to all our new Year 4 families. As you may be aware, we have a buddy system; to help learners who are new to Nexus settle in. We would like to thank the buddies and all our learners for helping to support their new classmates.
Our first Unit of Inquiry of the year is 'Who We Are' with the central idea of 'Informed choices support wellbeing'. This is a great opportunity to share ideas about our rights and responsibilities; ways to develop a growth mindset and things we can do to look after our health and happiness. We hope this Inquiry will set us up for a great year of social, emotional and academic learning head.
Congratulations to Year 5 learners on a wonderful start to the year. We welcome new and existing families to our Nexus community. It is a joy to see learners arrive each morning with a bounce in their step, excited for a new day. Routines are now more familiar and everyone is settled into their learning and play spaces.
Year 5 learners have created a collaborative essential agreement that supports a shared understanding of our Nexus values. Each learner has had the opportunity to share their ideas about our roles and responsibilities connected to Respect, Excellence, Communication, Integrity, Passion and Enjoyable Environments. We will continue to refer to these expectations throughout the year.
To begin our year, our unit of inquiry has been focused on the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are. Engagements have been intentionally planned to develop an increased understanding of how learners can be responsible digital citizens. Areas of focus have included: media choices, private and personal information, our digital footprint, communicating online, cyberbullying and being a super digital citizen.
We do ask that learners have their devices and apple pencils named, as this makes it much easier to identify the owner, should they ever be misplaced. This week as part of home learning we would like families to develop a digital essential agreement. The aim of this is to create expectations or guidelines that your child will follow when using their device at home. We hope this will help to support purposeful use of their iPad. A useful resource for parents is commonsensemedia.org. This website answers frequently asked questions and provides valuable guidance.
Welcome to the 2023-24 academic year!
The Year 6 learning spaces have been full of energy, as we have welcomed new and returning learners. It's been great to see how learners are following routines, and already applying themselves well in homeroom and specialist subjects.
As well as getting to know one another and co-creating our Essential Agreements we've also been focusing on our first UOI inquiring into How We Organise Ourselves with the central idea 'Our ability to share issues allows us to collaborate to foster positive change within communities.' We will be revising this UOI throughout the year.
Stay tuned to hear what we get involved in.
We are excited to introduce a fantastic opportunity for our primary learners to take the lead and make a meaningful impact on our school community. Nexus believes in nurturing leadership skills from an early age, and this year, we are proud to announce the formation of the Primary Learner Council.
What is the Primary Learner Council?
The Primary Learner Council is a group of young leaders representing each class from Years 3 to 6. These dedicated learners will work together to bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and positive change to our school. They will be actively involved in projects that link to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum, aligning with their units of inquiry.
How will the Council work?
The Primary Learner Council will meet weekly in their year levels to discuss, plan, and implement projects that reflect their interests and the needs of our school. These projects will be designed to make a positive impact on our school community, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility among our primary learners.
Get Involved!
We encourage you to discuss this exciting opportunity with your child and support their interest in becoming a part of the Primary Learner Council. It's a chance for them to not only shape their own school experience but also to contribute to the vibrant Nexus community. Candidates will be selected from each class in Years 3-6 by August 31st.
