Since it opened, Next Charter School has been devoted to engaging students in learning through project-based learning (PBL). PBL is a method for making school more dynamic by allowing students to connect with various subjects on a deeper level, rather than the old-fashioned ways of studying and taking tests. And it works. Students who do PBL remember the questions, content, research, pathways, and outcomes far longer than students who go along more conventional routes for school.
PBL begins with an essential question or problem that needs to be solved. Then, students investigate, collaborate, exhibit, and present an answer or solution, all the while getting and responding to feedback from educators.
One of the hallmarks of PBL is creating a sense of authenticity through presentation to an audience. After all, if many people see a project's outcome, students will create something they are proud of, and that lasts longer than any test score or essay grade. True PBL is multi-disciplinary and present outside the walls of a school. To see some of the examples Next students have done in the community, see the NCS Outdoors website created by students in 2024. In English, however, not all projects can be shared easily with the world, which is why we created this website. The navigation bars at the top of the page will take you through a series of real-world projects created by Next Charter School students to highlight their skills in writing, reading, speaking, and media literacy.
