Carl Jung, the eminent psychologist, believed that all humans are essentially 12 personality types, or archetypes. His work in this area is so renowned that it has been the basis for many areas of study, including entertainment. Understanding how the media represents individuals or groups of individuals can have a profound effect on how everyday people act, react, and interact with one another. This is especially true for teens, as a high school movie trope is to scan the lunchroom and see the groups and the hierarchy of popularity. In this class, students will view movies and several scenes from film and television that place characters in particular identity groups so students can make a determination as to whether the archetypes shown on screen accurately reflect reality.
