The School Counseling Department provides a framework for students to meet developmental school counseling standards called Student Success Plans.
A Student Success Plan is an individualized portfolio based on a student's interests and strengths that will be developed and monitored to help every student stay connected in school and to set and achieve academic, social-emotional, and future goals.
Student Success Plans are directly linked with the Newtown Public Schools Strategic Plan.
Objective 1 - Student Success Plans allow students to develop their global readiness within our Future focus area.
Objective 2 - Each Student develops their social/emotional wellness through the SEL components within their plans
Objective 3 - Student success Plans include the creation of personalized goal setting that is revisited each year.

Vision of a Successful Student Transitioning From Our School Counseling Program
HIGH SCHOOL
We believe a successful student graduating from Newtown High School has taken full advantage of our comprehensive school counseling program. We strive to help students flourish academically, make continuous social/emotional growth, and informed decisions to achieve their future goals.
Before your son/daughter transitions to fulfill their post-secondary plans, they would have learned about their learning styles, tips on standardized testing, how to use the Naviance program, the importance of getting involved outside of school, and learning their “standout factor”, developing a strong resume and academic transcript, career interests, personality types, coping skills, future goals and much more. These lessons occur in the fall semester for freshmen as they transition to high school as well as for seniors as they work through their application process. Sophomore and juniors lessons cover specific topics relevant to their grade which occur in the spring semester. Please click the following link: Classroom Lessons to get a sense of what your son/daughter will be learning at the next level.
We also offer a variety of programs and services to support each student’s academic, social/emotional, and future goals. Here are a few examples of what your son/daughter has experienced while with us: individual counseling, counselor workshop lessons, group meetings, course selection meetings, junior planning meetings, grade-level parent presentations, and individual check-ins. The following link: programs/services provide information at each level.
We need to connect with students and we do this in a variety of ways. We meet with students individually, in Counselor Workshop, within our Advisory Program, and in group settings just to name a few.
Each student has a strength or interest that makes them unique and special. These classroom lessons, programs services, and student interactions allow us to guide students through this self-exploration process for each student to flourish, fulfill their goals, and make a smooth transition to the next level.
Newtown’s definition of a Student Success Plan
An individualized portfolio based on student’s interests and strengths that will be developed and monitored to help every student stay connected in school and to set and achieve academic, social-emotional, and future goals.
Each year students work toward their goals through their Student Success Plans. This is where each student creates an academic, social/emotional, or future goal each year. This happens during Counselor Workshops annually, in the fall for freshmen and seniors and in the spring for sophomores and juniors.
You can find these goals, along with a complete look at your son/daughter’s portfolio on Naviance. Click the About Me tab on Naviance which stores this portfolio. Naviance is a wonderful tool that outlines a lot of the work we do with students in a personalized fashion. This portfolio will be a culmination of work that will help students successfully transition to the next level and eventually toward an appropriate post-secondary plan in line with their goals.
It is our hope that we can collectively work together to help your son/daughter grow to fulfill their potential and accomplish their goals. Much of what we do is listed on our website. Please be patient with our website as our district is in the process of updating.
We want you to be informed along the way and we will keep in contact by sending out emails, regular newsletters, parent informational evenings by specific grade level, invitations to come in for individualized meetings as well as being available anytime that is convenient for you. We are also more than happy to meet with you along the way. Don’t hesitate to contact your school counselor directly via email or phone. The following link will direct you to the counselor assignments and contact information of our counselors at Newtown High School.
Counselors equip students with the tools they need to be successful citizens in a changing world.
"Right now I want to be an Environmental Manager. The counselors at every level have strived to help me find my dream. I had to set goals along the way. Sometimes I changed my mind as I went along when I learned about things I was good at and things I knew I didn't want to do in the future. Counselors helped me prepare by giving me the most important skills so I could be happy with my future plans with academics, my social life, and who I am."
---Benjamin Albee - Class of 2019
