Newtown High School partners with the following colleges to offer our academically motivated students opportunities to take college-level courses while still in high school and receive significant savings for college.
These Dual Enrollment programs allow students to preview college work and build confidence in their readiness for college. They may earn college credits that provide both an academic and financial head-start on a college degree. UCONN ECE instructors, who are high school teachers certified as adjunct professors by UCONN faculty, create a classroom environment that fosters independent learning, creativity, and critical thinking—all pivotal for success in college. To support rigorous learning, the University of Connecticut Library resources are available to all UCONN ECE students. These courses will be weighted at the honors level except for the AP courses, which will be weighted as AP. Successful students receive college credits and a college transcript in addition to fulfilling Newtown High School credit/course requirements. These college credits are highly transferable to other colleges and universities. Please see the websites above for specific, up-to-date information on costs and more about the many benefits of taking these courses. Students will receive additional information about the registration process in class.
Students enrolled in AP courses can expect a rigorous academic course experience. These courses, offered in a variety of areas, follow a curriculum created by the College Board. To be successful in these college level courses, excellent skills, an enjoyment of challenging material and a strong work ethic are essential. Students interested in these courses may be required to attend an informational meeting before the end of this year and may be required to complete summer assignments. Students are expected to take the appropriate Advanced Placement Examination in May. Colleges and Universities potentially grant credit, depending on the score earned on the AP exam. Further information about AP exams can be found on the College Board website. Please review course prerequisites and descriptions before deciding on an AP course. A complete list of courses that students can take at Newtown High School, with the potential to earn college credit, can be found below.
