Describe the relationship between potential and kinetic energy
Use evidence from investigation to describe how energy is transferred/transformed
Model thermal energy transfer by convection, conduction and radiation
Using an understanding of thermal energy transfer, design a system that minimizes/maximizes thermal energy transfer
Use evidence to describe that fields exist, including gravitational, magnetic and electrical fields
What is energy, and how can it change?
How can we design systems to regulate the transfer of energy?
Students will engage in a variety of activities, including:
Investigating energy transfer using physical materials and digital simulations
Conducting investigations and observing demonstrations that show convection, conduction, and radiation
Designing a house that regulates thermal energy transfer
Use a model to describe how matter and energy are transferred in an ecosystem, including photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and relationships between producers, consumers and decomposers
Describe how relationships among and between organisms in an ecosystem can be competitive, predatory, parasitic, and mutually beneficial
Use a model to explain how the energy of the Sun and Earth’s gravity drive the cycling of water
Provide evidence that disruptions to an ecosystem can cause changes to all of its populations
How are organisms in an ecosystem dependent on one another?
What is the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration?
What effect can a human or natural disruption have on an ecosystem?
Students will engage in a variety of activities, including:
Observing local ecosystems for evidence of ecosystem dynamics
Modeling food webs, including matter and energy transfer
Analyzing data from a specific ecosystem in order to describe the relationships between organisms, and how disruptions to that ecosystem can cause shifts in populations
Humans in the Ecosystem
Provide evidence that disruptions to an ecosystem can cause changes to all of its populations
Describe how human activity may negatively impact and ecosystem, and how human activity and technology can mitigate the human impact on natural resources
How can humans negatively impact their local ecosystems?
Students will engage in a variety of activities, including:
Examining biodiversity and human impact in a given ecosystem
Designing solutions to mitigate human impact in that ecosystem
