Health & Wellness Education
The middle school Health and Wellness curriculum is a skills-based curriculum geared to meet the developmental needs of all students. Aligned with the National Health Standards, the curriculum aims to empower students to make informed and responsible choices regarding their health and well-being for a lifetime. Analyzing Influences: Influences on our Health and Relationships
- Define culture and analyze the influences of culture on healthy behaviors
- Analyze the influences of family and peers on our health and relationships
- Analyze how media and technology impact our health and choices
- Discuss how our background and the world around us affect our ability to make decisions and our behaviors
Goal Setting: Sleep, Hygiene, and Stress Management
- Identify the skill cues for goal setting and demonstrate the ability to use these skills to enhance personal health
- Describe and apply steps and strategies for setting a SMART goal
- Define hygiene and increase self-awareness about hygiene habits
- Discuss the importance of adequate sleep and brainstorm ways to get enough sleep
- Define stress and apply strategies to reduce and manage stress
- Apply goal-setting skills cues and strategies to improve and maintain healthy habits related to sleep, hygiene and stress management
Self-Enhancing Behaviors: Nutrition and Exercise
- Explain how a balanced diet following US Dietary Guidelines relates to overall health and the prevention of chronic diseases
- Explain basic nutritional facts regarding food groups, nutrients, recommended servings and serving sizes
- Analyze nutritional information on food labels and describe how to use that information to make informed decisions about food
- Gather information from an Ingredient List including information about Allergens
- Describe the benefits of exercise and physical activity for physical and emotional health
- Reflect on strategies of self-care to maintain overall wellness
Accessing Information: Substance Misuse Prevention
- Access valid information to enhance health from various types of resources
- Explain short and long-term effects of drug use and the benefits of not using substances, including nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, caffeine, opioids and inhalants
- Apply research from valid and reliable resources to create behavior-change health messages
Interpersonal Communication: Bullying Prevention and Conflict Resolution
- Use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks
- Apply effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills including speaking assertively and active listening
- Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to reduce bullying behavior
- Demonstrate how to ask for assistance in order to respond to bullying and be an ally to others
- Define direct and indirect bullying and give examples of each
- Describe the social and emotional consequences of bullying and harassment
- Analyze conflicts to identify aggressor, victim, bystander and ally
- Describe the power of an individual in reducing violence and identify situations where individuals can become active in resolving conflicts
- Recognize the value of friends, family and community as sources of help in times of stress, conflict or trouble
Growing and Changing: Growth, Development and Human Sexuality
- Identify the characteristics of a healthy relationship
- Establish personal boundaries and identify the consequences of crossing boundaries
