Physical Education, Health and Wellness
The purpose of Newton Public Schools Physical Education, Health, and Wellness Department is to nurture and implement an overall wellness approach. The department's mission is to provide the school community with a comprehensive, inclusive, and equitable education encompassing physical and health literacy, social-emotional intelligence, and self-efficacy skills to lead health-promoting lives. The goal is for students to find joy in movement and get inspired to be physically active. The P.E.H.W. curriculum seeks to equip students with the knowledge and abilities necessary for making informed decisions about their well-being and their impact on community and global wellness. Description: Movement Concepts include spatial awareness, body awareness, effort and relationships. By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Understand and demonstrate personal and general space in closed and open environments
- Identify and demonstrate levels, shapes, speed, directions, pathways, force, rhythmic movements, locomotor and non-locomotor movement patterns
- Explain routines, rules, and safety procedures in P.E.H.W. class
Project Adventure Cooperative Learning
Description: Project Adventure is experiential adventure learning that focuses on cooperation, community building, team building, self-control, advocacy, inclusion, and problem-solving skills. By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Demonstrate community-building and teamwork skills such as communication, cooperation, kindness, acceptance, and inclusion
- Recognize personal emotions and the emotions of others
- Use strategies related to self-regulation, problem-solving, and cooperation
Manipulative
Movement Skills
Description: Manipulative movement skills are fundamental gross motor skills, in which force is imparted to receive or move an object with a body part or implement.By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Demonstrate community-building and teamwork skills such as communication, cooperation, kindness, acceptance, and inclusion
- Recognize personal emotions and the emotions of others
- Use strategies related to self-regulation, problem-solving, and cooperation
Description: Fitness encompasses the five components of fitness, which include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition, as well as skill-related fitness (balance, speed, power, agility, coordination, and reaction time). Examples in different schools: Parkour, obstacle courses, fitness stations, exercise equipment, jump rope, high ropes, gymnastics, Tabata, dance, etc.) By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Recognize body responses and changes in their emotions during movement and physical activity
- Identify “heart healthy” activities and muscular strengthening activities
- Describe the benefits of exercising, sleeping, and balanced nutrition
Description: Nutrition and balanced eating contribute to overall wellness, happiness, and longevity. By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Identify that food is the preferred way of obtaining nutrients and provides energy to the body
- Identify a variety of foods in each food group and how those foods help your body
- Describe how foods people eat may reflect the area in which they live and or their cultural background, food allergies, or dietary preferences
Description: Creating healthy habits when children are young will help them make informed decisions about their overall wellness. By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Identify a variety of habits that can promote children’s health
- Understand the names of body parts relating to their body systems
- Discuss ways to self-advocate for their personal health
Manipulative Movement Skills
Description: Manipulative movement skills are fundamental gross motor skills, in which force is imparted to receive or move an object with a body part or implement.By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Explain the meaning of eye-hand and foot-hand coordination
- Identify the amount of force it takes to strike, kick, volley, or dribble a stationary object with their body part and implement
- Identify the amount of force it takes to strike, kick, volley, or dribble a moving object with their body part and implement
Description: Invasion games are games in which the aim is to invade an opponent's territory and score a goal or point. By the end of 2nd grade, students will be able to:- Understand concepts related to competitive games
- Use strategies for resolving misunderstandings and conflict during competitive games
- Develop an understanding of offensive and defensive skills
