Physical Education, Health and Wellness Grades 3-5
P.E.H.W. Overview
The purpose of Newton Public Schools Physical Education, Health, and Wellness Department is to nurture and implement an overall wellness approach. The department's mission is to provide the school community with a comprehensive, inclusive, and equitable education encompassing physical and health literacy, social-emotional intelligence, and self-efficacy skills to lead health-promoting lives. The goal is for students to find joy in movement and get inspired to be physically active. The P.E.H.W. curriculum seeks to equip students with the knowledge and abilities necessary for making informed decisions about their well-being and their impact on community and global wellness.
Movement Concepts
Description: Movement Concepts include spatial awareness, body awareness, effort and relationships.
Learning Targets
By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to combine locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills in a variety of settings
Demonstrate knowledge of concepts related to spatial awareness, movement patterns, and body awareness
Demonstrate movement concepts and weight transfer techniques, to create or perform a gymnastics sequence, a jump rope routine, a dance, or another cultural/creative activity independently, with a partner, or in a group
Project Adventure/ Cooperative Learning
Description: Project Adventure is experiential adventure learning that focuses on cooperation, community building, team building, self-control, advocacy, inclusion, and problem-solving skills.
Learning Targets
By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Demonstrate community-building and teamwork skills such as communication, cooperation, kindness, acceptance, respect and inclusion
Identify feelings and emotions different people experience in different situations, cultures, and environments and use strategies to help manage emotions
Accept, recognize, and actively involve others with varying abilities in physical activities
Manipulative Movement Skills
Description: Manipulative movement skills are fundamental gross motor skills, in which force is imparted to receive or move an object with a body part or implement. Examples of skill-building activities in different schools:throwing and catching games, basketball, soccer, frisbee, handball, hockey, pickleball, rugby, lacrosse, volleyball, football, golf or other sport-related games.

By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Demonstrate developmentally appropriate skill cue patterns for manipulative movements in a wide variety of situations and tasks
Demonstrate the ability to combine movement skills in control during small-sided games and tasks
Describe why following game rules are important in physical activity settings
Fitness/Wellness
Description: Fitness encompasses the five components of fitness, which include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition, as well as skill-related fitness (balance, speed, power, agility, coordination, and reaction time). Wellness concepts related to social, emotional, and physical health are explored.
Examples of activities in different schools: Parkour, obstacle courses, fitness stations, exercise equipment, jump rope, high ropes, gymnastics, Tabata, dance, etc.)

Nutrition
Description: Nutrition and balanced eating contribute to overall wellness, happiness, and longevity.
Learning Targets
By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Identify principles of balanced eating to meet nutritional needs
Discuss the benefits of balanced eating on physical health, social health and mental health
Demonstrate an understanding of food labels and how nutrients play a role in bodily functions
Substance Prevention
Description: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
Learning Targets
By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Identify vaping and tobacco products and the chemicals in the products
Understand a variety of short-term and long-term harmful effects of tobacco and vaping products
Discuss refusal skills to avoid substances (vaping, tobacco, and other harmful substances)
Manipulative Movement Skills
Description: Manipulative movement skills are fundamental gross motor skills, in which force is imparted to receive or move an object with a body part or implement.

Use communication skills to negotiate roles and responsibilities related to game play
Describe the physical, social and emotional benefits of playing with others in physical education and other physical activity settings
Invasion Games
Description: Invasion games are games in which the aim is to invade an opponent's territory and score a goal or point.
Examples of skill-building activities in different schools: throwing and catching games, basketball, soccer, frisbee, handball, hockey, pickleball, rugby, lacrosse, volleyball, football, golf or other sport-related games.

By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to:
Apply basic offensive and defensive strategies and tactics in a variety of activities and small-sided games
Apply movement concepts, principles and strategies to avoid objects within dynamic environments
Demonstrate the ability to use strategies to manage emotions that evolve from competitive game play
