African Services Committee provides free, online English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESOL) classes for beginners. The ESOL program enables immigrants, refugees, and asylees to develop the language and literacy skills they need to interact, engage, and build opportunity for themselves and their families. Classes are open to any adult with beginner level English, though class sizes are limited.

The ANSOB Center provides English language instruction at both the beginner and intermediate levels. Classes are taught by experienced instructors and offered during evening hours so that clients may make use of this service both prior to, and subsequent to, obtaining employment. These classes are a valuable resource for community members seeking employment and those preparing for the citizenship exam.

CEUS offers both English as a Second Language and Spanish Literacy programs, across a range of ability levels. The latter is geared toward Spanish-speakers who need help and writing in their native language.
The classes run in three ten-week semesters a year and include three levels of English classes, a conversation class, and two levels of Spanish literacy classes. The average enrollment is about 65 English students per semester and a dozen Spanish literacy students. All classes are scheduled for a Sunday, the day when most community members are able to attend. Classes cost students a moderate $50 a semester.

Community Impact offers free English classes for adult immigrants who live in the New York City area. There are 6 levels, ranging from Beginner Literacy to Advanced. All of their classes are held at sites in Harlem and other neighborhoods near the Columbia University campus. Each year they offer three 12-week cycles during the Fall (September to December), Spring (January to May), and Summer (June to August).

CLIP is an intensive ESL program of 25 hours of instruction each week for entering freshmen who have already been admitted to a CUNY college. However, we also accept students who have failed one semester of ESL at a 2-year CUNY college or those who have been referred by a senior college.
3 possible cycles: Summer, Fall and Spring.
Day or evening classes: 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Imani House is a Brooklyn, NY based non-profit agency known for its free innovative youth and family support services. The Imani House Adult Education Program offers free, small-group and one-on-one classes in: Basic Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), HSE Test Prep (GED), Pre-HSE (GED), Math Tutoring.

The International Center is the ESOL department of Catholic Charities Community Services in New York City. We offer English language classes, skills workshops, cultural programs, & social services to immigrants, refugees, students, & other newcomers to the United States. Each year, with the help of our dedicated volunteers, our programs serve hundreds of learners from all backgrounds, cultures, & identities.

Queens Library System is looking for volunteers to lead ESOL conversation groups that meet once per week for 1.5 hours. The groups are year-round and students come in on a walk-in basis. Volunteers are given a training, and it's a great opportunity for any current Masters students to get their feet wet and build their resume. Sponsored by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), We Speak NYC is an English-language learning program that organizes conversation groups to increase ESL literacy in the city. The groups run in 7-10 week courses, and are looking for volunteers for fall group leaders. You can sign up to volunteer here.
