CTE alumna Juliette Bravo talks about why she chose CTE and how she benefited from the program.
"The CTE program at the New School is the perfect choice for anyone who is considering an ESL career because it provides practical, hands-on experience that serves as a foundation for all types and levels of teaching, from survival English at community based programs to academic English at universities."

"The strong focus of the New School program on teaching by doing is far more practical and beneficial than other programs I've encountered. It's a fine balance between pedagogy and application, but that is also what we must balance in the classroom: our students need to use the language, not just study it. I believe the CTE program prepares future English language teachers extremely well."
- Catherine Angus
The New School CTE program is fully online, offering maximum flexibility and accessibility for students learning the most up-to-date in-person as well as online pedagogy.
Every course has weekly synchronous class times where students receive direct instruction from the teachers and engage with their fellow classmates.
"I completed my last course online, the teaching Practicum. it was very effective and well-run. The time flew by and the interactions planned were awesome. I recorded my teaching for review and all went smoothly. I have used and continue to use many of the techniques learned in this and other courses."
- Phyllis Shapiro,
Part-Time Assistant Professor, Parsons

"I was impacted greatly by a number of very capable and enthusiastic instructors and their teaching methods. To this day, I often consult the notes and materials from my classes to help me with my own teaching. I also learned a lot from working with my peers in the program, both in the classroom and as a volunteer in the school's community outreach program."

Novice teachers can expect to spend at least two hours of lesson planning for each hour teaching, so factor this in when planning to take Methods and Practicum courses.

The Methods and Techniques course (usually the first course) requires you to volunteer teach for a minimum total 10 hours.
The Teaching Practicum (the last course in the program) requires you to teach a minimum total of 15 hours.
The ELS department has a long-standing relationship with many community-based organizations that maintain ESL programs in and around New York City. Typically, you arrange to teach in one of the partnering institutions. The office will provide assistance when necessary.

"I've made an entire second career out of TESOL, teaching in the classroom and more recently online for universities in New York and abroad, as well as numerous private students. When I was in the program, I never could have imagined the work I've done since."
