6th Grade
English and Reading 6, This class provides opportunities for students to make the transition from elementary to middle school language arts skills. They will receive instruction in higher level reading and writing skills while reading widely in classic and contemporary selections and informational texts. Emphasis is on comprehension, vocabulary and thinking skills in an interactive environment so that students: listen actively; speak/talk to construct; read, write, and view critically.
English and Reading 6 Honors, This is a rigorous class that provides opportunities for students to make the transition from elementary to middle school language arts skills. English and Reading GT, The Middle School English Program for Gifted Students is built around a differentiated curriculum that is advanced 3-5 years above the traditional curriculum for 6th graders. The sixth grade GT curriculum is established on the theme of Discovery of Language. Materials are chosen to offer an appropriate challenge in all areas of language arts, including Beowulf, Canterbury Tales excerpts, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and/or The Hobbit, in addition to other selected pieces that fit the theme. Prerequisite: Qualification for the Middle School GT English Program.
Reading Workshop 6, Reading Workshop is designed to provide intensive, targeted intervention for students who have been identified through the Student Success Initiative guidelines as at –risk for reading difficulties. Students enrolled in this class must also be enrolled in a regular grade-appropriate reading class.
7th Grade
English and Reading 7, This class allows students to refine and master previously learned English language arts and reading skills in increasingly complex reading selections. They continue to receive instruction in higher level reading and writing skills while reading widely in classic and contemporary selections and informational texts. Emphasis is on comprehension, vocabulary and thinking skills in an interactive environment so that students: listen actively; speak/talk to construct; read, write, and view critically.
English and Reading 7 Honors, This is a rigorous class that allows students to refine and master previously learned English language arts and reading skills in increasingly complex and advanced reading selections. They continue to receive instruction in higher level reading and writing skills while reading widely in classic and contemporary selections and informational texts. Emphasis is on comprehension, vocabulary and thinking skills in an interactive environment so that students: listen actively; speak/talk to construct; read, write, and view critically.

Materials are chosen to offer an appropriate challenge in all areas of language arts, including Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Macbeth, and To Kill A Mockingbird in addition to other selected pieces that fit the theme. Prerequisites: Previous enrollment in the North East GT English Program or qualification for the Middle School GT English Program.

Students enrolled in this class must also be enrolled in a regular grade-appropriate reading class.
8th Grade

English and Reading 8 Honors, This is a rigorous class that prepares students for challenging courses in high school. Students refine and master previously learned English language arts and reading skills in increasingly complex and advanced reading selections. They continue to receive instruction in higher level reading and writing skills while reading widely in classic and contemporary selections and informational texts. Emphasis is on comprehension, vocabulary and thinking skills in an interactive environment so that students: listen actively; speak/talk to construct; read, write, and view critically.

Materials are chosen to offer an appropriate challenge in all areas of language arts, including A Separate Peace, Night, Odyssey, The Tempest, and Pygmalion/My Fair Lady in addition to other selected pieces that fit the theme. Prerequisites: Previous enrollment in the North East GT English Program or qualification for the Middle School GT English Program.
Reading Workshop 8, Reading Workshop is designed to provide intensive, targeted intervention for students who have been identified through the Student Success Initiative guidelines as at –risk for reading difficulties. Students enrolled in this class must also be enrolled in a regular grade-appropriate reading class. The 8th grade Reading Workshop course earns a high school credit.
