Chat, Rooms, and Meet

Google Chat and Rooms

Google Chat allows for text conversations between individuals or among a group. Chats can include anyone with a google account, including colleagues at other institutions using Google. The Chat history is turned on by default allowing you to search your chat content in your Gmail search box. Chats can be created and deleted, or left in your chat list to be opened and closed as needed.

Google Rooms are more similar to Microsoft Teams. A room allows for threaded conversations, the use of the @first.last to call out an individual team member, as well as a way to tie conversations to Shared Drives (or files) and Tasks (to-do items).

Both Google Chat and Google Rooms can be found in the lower left of your Gmail inbox window.

The Chat App allows you to keep a separate window with Chat, Rooms and Meet open on your computer without having to have your mailbox in front of you all day. It also provides a larger window to work in.

Google Meet

Google Meet is Google's Video Conferencing Tool. You can include a Google Meet link in your Calendar Events, or you can launch a new meeting from the Google Meet tool in the lower left of your Gmail inbox window
