Chris Culver has been teaching Physics at Saint Joseph HS in South Bend since 2007. Prior to teaching, he held a variety positions including serving in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. He completed 29 years in the US Navy and retired from the Navy Reserves in 2019 as a CAPT. In addition to teaching Physics, Chris also has taught PLTW Cyber Security, Earth and Space Science, Algebra II, and Faith and Science.
Chris earned a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990, and a Masters of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame in 2000, and a Masters of Education from the University of Notre Dame in 2009.
Chris has been participating in QuarkNet since 2022, although he as participated in several Masterclasses before then. He spent one summer working with the CMS Data group and has spent the last two years working with the Environmental Sensors group. With the Environmental Sensor group, Chris has focused on calibration and accuracy of the sensors, and powering the next generation of sensors using solar panels.
Chris has also incorporated data logger use into his Science Club. In 2023-24 his science club made 18 data loggers and donated 12 of them to underfunded schools in Montana and Chicago. In May 2025 his science club flew a weather balloon with four student created data loggers and experiments. You can see the data from the Balloon Launch here.
