We expect Visitors to arrive on campus before the semester begins. Generally, classes begin during the third week in August for the fall semester and during the third week of January for the spring semester.
Please provide the exact date of your arrival as soon as it is confirmed. It is very helpful for you to arrive on campus during office hours (M–F, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm) to facilitate check-in to your apartment, etc.
Visitors are offered one economy round-trip airfare, provided that arrangements and approval are confirmed beforehand. Arrangements and additional charges for stopovers, detours, and travel companions are the responsibility of the visitor him/herself. We regret that we cannot assume the travel expenses of any dependents (spouse, children) who may accompany you.
Regarding your travel arrangements, visiting fellows have two options:
Reimbursement—You may make your own travel arrangements, buy the ticket yourself, and we will reimburse you. Please confirm all travel arrangements prior to purchasing a ticket. Also, please send a copy of your itinerary as soon as you have it. (Please note that you must have a ticket receipt in order for the University to process a reimbursement. In some cases, e.g., with e-tickets, this means that you must request a receipt at the ticket counter when you check in for your flight).
University travel agency—If you prefer, we can make the arrangements for you through the University’s travel agency and charge the ticket directly to Kellogg. (We regret that we are unable to charge tickets for accompanying family members unless you provide us with your credit card information). Most visiting fellows find that the first option is more convenient and offers them more flexibility, given the number of choices that need to be made in making travel plans. However, if you would like us to book your ticket, please notify us as soon as possible regarding the dates you would like to arrive and depart South Bend.
Should you choose to drive to and from Notre Dame instead of fly, you will be reimbursed for your travel mileage up to the cost of a round trip economy ticket. You will need to provide a copy of your trip (e.g. Google Maps) that displays the mileage traveled to process your reimbursement. Additional expenses for moving truck rentals or professional movers are not covered under this travel policy.

Turn right onto Angela, and then turn left at the second stoplight (Eddy Street). Follow signs to visitor parking.
Visitors also can fly into Chicago then drive or take a bus to Notre Dame. The University is about two hours by car from Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport and about 90 minutes from Midway International Airport. From O'Hare, take I-190 east out of the airport, merge onto I-90 east (the Kennedy Expressway) toward downtown Chicago and merge with I-94 south (the Dan Ryan Expressway). Take the Skyway exit off the Dan Ryan and remain on I-90 to the Indiana Toll Road, which merges with I-80. From the Illinois border, it is about 75 miles to Exit 77 (the South Bend/Notre Dame exit).
From the north: The University is located just south of the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80/90). Exit I-80/90 at Exit 77 and turn right onto Indiana 933. Make a left at the fourth stop light (Angela Boulevard), then turn left at the second stoplight (Eddy Street). Follow signs to visitor parking.
From the south: Take U.S. 31 north which becomes Indiana 933 just south of the city of South Bend. Stay on Indiana 933 through downtown South Bend to Angela Boulevard. Turn right onto Angela, and then turn left at the second stoplight (Eddy Street). Follow signs to visitor parking.
The South Shore Line trains run directly from the Chicago Loop (corner of Michigan and Randolph) to South Bend Regional Airport in South Bend (about a two-hour trip). From the airport, the Notre Dame campus is approximately a 15-minute ride by car. Various transportation methods are available (e.g. taxi, rental car, limo).
