Physical Education & Physical Activity

NCSU district schools work to create an environment that offers multiple opportunities for students to be physically active throughout the school day. Efforts include work toward a comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) that reflects strong coordination across five components: physical education, physical activity during school, physical activity before and after school, staff involvement, and family and community engagement. Physical Education (PE) serves as the foundation of a CSPAP and is an academic subject characterized by a planned, sequential preK-12 curriculum (course of study) that is based on the national standards for physical education (https://www.shapeamerica.org/standards/pe/).

NCSU PE teachers are certified or licensed, and endorsed by the state to teach physical education.

  • Vermont is assuring student education in physical education and activity. Beginning in the 2019 School year the PE and PA programs will have an assessment component to it adding even greater value of Physical Education (PE) in particular.
  • AOE states we know that healthier students perform better in every other aspect of school.
  • The Vermont Agency of Education has selected FitnessGram to serve as its statewide physical education assessment for state and federal accountability purposes.
  • FitnessGram is a non-competitive fitness assessment developed in 1982 by The Cooper Institute, and is currently the most widely used fitness assessment tool nationally.
  • FitnessGram will be field tested statewide in the 2017-2018 school year. And it will be formally incorporated into the state’s accountability system beginning in 2018-2019.

      • “Encore After-School and Summer Programs are a 21st Century Grant funded program run through North Country Supervisory Union. The mission of Encore is to enrich students and families by providing a nurturing environment and activities that promote academic achievement, wellness, character development, and life-long learning. Our vision is to be part of a rural community that expands, rather than limits, our children's dreams and opportunities. After school programs are offered at 10 sites in NCSU daily, from approximately the end of the school day, to 5:00 PM, and five weeks during the summer. Our programs serve a snack, provide homework help, and a one hour enrichment program in multitudes of subjects, including STEM, nutrition, literacy, arts, and exercise. Programs cost between $0 and $3 per day, depending on the site, however no child will ever be turned away due to inability to pay, and scholarships are available at every site.”
