Nutrition Environment & Services

NCSU provides school nutrition services and meals that meet federal nutrition standards for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. These services accommodate the health and nutrition needs of all students, and help ensure that foods and beverages sold outside of the school meal programs (i.e., competitive foods) meet Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards. NCSU works to support all our school communities in creating a healthy school nutrition environment by marketing and promoting healthier foods and beverages, role-modeling healthy eating behaviors, and ensuring that students have access to free drinking water throughout the school day.

Healthy eating has been linked in studies to improved learning outcomes and helps ensure that students are able to reach their potential. The Vermont Agency of Education and the National School Lunch [and food] programs provide reimbursement for lunches served to students enrolled in all grades. Reimbursement is provided at three levels: free, reduced price, and full price (or paid). Families may submit applications to receive free or reduced-price meal benefits. • NCSU’s “Encore After School and Summer Programs" are a 21st Century Grant funded program run through North Country Supervisory Union. Our programs serve a snack, provide homework help, and a one-hour enrichment program in multitudes of subjects, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), nutrition, literacy, arts, and exercise. Programs cost between $0 and $3 per day, depending on the site, however no child will ever be turned away due to inability to pay, and scholarships are available at every site.”
