In Summer 2022, I had the incredible opportunity working as an Instructional Design Intern for Charter Communications (aka Spectrum). I spent 10 weeks working in-person in their Denver, CO office redesigning and managing six maintenance technician trainings.
This mainly included working in transitioning content in Adobe Captivate to Xyleme. Because I was unfamiliar with these platforms before I started, I self-taught myself these applications in order to become fully comfortable in designing the most efficient and successful trainings as possible.
I presented my final project to a board of senior instructional design managers, and received positive feedback for my work. Below is my final presentation.
As my first internship in Instructional Design, I came into this position with little knowledge and background of the field as I was just beginning my graduate coursework. I was nervous to join as an intern in my first corporate office experience, in a new city, living alone. However, I was able to navigate learning the online platforms by completing training and doing research, made strong connections and relationships with my manager, mentor, and coworkers, and asked many questions to strengthen my skills and execute my project with professionalism and success. At the end of my internship, I presented my work to the board of directors of the field operations unit, and I had one manager reach out to me after my presentation asking for the book I read and used to gain inspiration in creating the trainings. That book is called Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Henry L. Roediger III, Mark A. McDaniel, and Peter C Brown. To say the least, I was extremely proud of myself and the work I created for the betterment of the company, and was able to start the process of developing my skillset in instructional design in the corporate space.
