The Goodnight Scholars Program hosts a week-long spring break service trip extending from the mountains to coastline of North Carolina. This all-expenses-paid trip is exclusively for Goodnight Scholars. GSPs will not be awarded for this trip.
North Carolina: Mountains to Coast is an interdisciplinary service-learning trip focused on providing accessible STEM enrichment for middle school students in rural communities. Scholars chosen for the trip will share their enthusiasm for STEM while leading fun STEM activities connected to 6th-8th grade science curriculum. Time will also be dedicated to exploring North Carolina’s unique history and natural resources through cultural excursions, outdoor activities, and professional development.

This trip is for anyone who is passionate about education, STEM, and North Carolina. This trip will provide a first-hand introduction to the challenges and opportunities facing education in North Carolina. Scholars who want to help promote and expand STEM education, enjoy working with youth or just simply want to help improve North Carolina through service should consider applying. Scholars selected for this trip are expected to participate in monthly team meetings that will include team building exercises, training in program facilitation and working with youth, and local STEM education outreach activities.
Service work will be focused on leading STEM enrichment activities in rural communities across North Carolina. We will be traveling to multiple locations across the state working with middle school students. Goodnight Scholars selected for this trip will work hand in hand with educators and their students to teach STEM in creative, fun ways. Scholars will help instill a passion for STEM in students across North Carolina.
Of course! North Carolina is an intricate landscape with a rich history, breathtaking mountains, and beautiful coasts. This trip will travel through it all. Between stops at schools, this trip will take time to explore the great state of North Carolina.
This trip will take place Saturday, March 14th - Saturday, March 21st.
Goodnight Scholars interested in North Carolina - Mountains to Coast must apply for the trip through GS-NET once applications are available. Because of the high demand and limited slots for this trip, scholars are not guaranteed to be selected if they apply.
The application opens on August 26th and will close on October 5th at 11:59pm.
This trip is all-expenses paid including lodging, transportation, meals, and any admissions fees to cultural sites. You are only responsible for bringing any cash to purchase souvenirs or snacks.
Twelve (12) scholars will be selected. In total, we will have 15 individuals attend the trip. This includes one advisor and two team leaders (who have already been selected), and twelve participants. Scholars are selected based on the strength of their application essay and participation in the program.
Yes. If you withdraw from the trip for any reason other than a major medical or immediate family emergency (of which you will be required to provide proof), you will be expected to reimburse the Goodnight Scholars Program for the total per person cost of the trip, which is approximately $800.
Yes. You're required to attend two pre-trip meetings. You will also be required to participate in a STEM Day at a local middle school in the Spring, date TBD.
An information session will be held in the GS Lounge on Tuesday, September 30th @ 5:30-6:00pm.
