Enrichment grants are additional funding available to Goodnight Scholars who are pursuing educational and developmental opportunities outside of their traditional coursework. Examples include:
Alternative Service Break trips
Study Abroad
Travel to professional conferences
Undergraduate research (with faculty)
University-sponsored travel and enrichment opportunities
Before submitting your proposal, read over the Enrichment Grant section of the handbook for information about the enrichment grant interview process, post-enrichment grant expectations, and more.
You can submit one enrichment grant submission per deadline for a total of four submissions per academic year. Please note that enrichment grants are awarded based on 1) eligibility of proposal, 2) quality of application, 3) relevance to academic and professional goals, 4) priority for those who are submitting a proposal for the first time in the academic year, and 5) priority for those who are actively involved in the Program and on-campus.
Scholars are not eligible to receive grants for activities occurring after graduation or after the final semester of their scholarship (regardless of whether they graduated). Scholars can receive up to $5000 in enrichment grant funding per academic year.
Engineering Your Experience Funds: Goodnight scholars who pay the Engineering Enhancement fee are also eligible to receive an "Engineering Your Experience (EYE)" grant through the college of engineering.
University Honors Program Enhancement Awards: Students in the Honors Program have the opportunity to receive enhancement awards. There is also opportunities to assist in covering the cost of study abroad.
Entrepreneurship Funding: NCSU Innovation and Entrepreneurship offers funding for various entrepreneurship endeavors. Information can be found here.
NCSU Study Abroad Scholarships: Study Abroad scholarships have strict deadlines that occur way before the study abroad trips. Here is more information on scholarships. Below are the due dates for scholarship applications. Applying for a scholarship does not lock you into a trip.
Spring Sessions Abroad (semester or short term spring break) - August 1st - September 15th
Summer Sessions Abroad - October 1st - November 15th
Fall Sessions Abroad - December 1st - February 15th
Gilman Scholarship for Pell Grant recipients: Funding for students receiving Pell Grants who are interested in studying or interning abroad.
The application can be found here. You can apply for ANY deadline before your experience takes place. It does NOT have to be the deadline closest to your experience date, just before your experience takes place (ie; you can apply for the November 9th deadline if you want to do a summer study abroad). The deadlines for enrichment grant submissions are:
September 21st
November 9th
February 8th
April 5th
If the enrichment grant proposal is considered eligible and deserving of further consideration, the scholar will be invited to interview with Goodnight Scholarships office professional staff and discuss the proposed opportunity. Interviews are professional thus requiring a scholar to be dressed in professional or business casual attire and approach the interview with a formal mindset. Please bring any supporting materials and proposed budgets to the interview. All budgets will need to be created in google sheets. Interviews last approximately 30 minutes and include a post-interview reflection which allows for Goodnight Scholarships office professional staff to give feedback on a scholar’s interview.
Alternative Service Break (ASB) applicants: Students who are selected for an ASB travel experience and apply for an enrichment grant will no longer be required to interview for their enrichment grant. Instead, their award will be made based solely on their enrichment grant proposal. Please note that students must be accepted to an ASB travel experience prior to submitting their enrichment grant proposal.
Group travel applicants: Students who are travelling together as part of a group (ie. students travelling together to a professional conference) should reach out to Allison prior to submitting their enrichment grant proposal to determine if they should submit individual proposals or a single group proposal. This is not applicable to students participating in an ASB travel experience, who should submit individual proposals.
After the interview, the Goodnight Scholarships office professional staff decides on whether to fund, and if so, the amount of funding a scholar will receive. Funding comes in the form of a check or direct deposit. Funding takes approximately 2-3 weeks to produce after all enrichment grant interviews have been completed for the respective deadline. Students should expect to receive funds 5-6 weeks after the application deadline.
As part of the application process, students will submit their budgets via google sheet. For all study abroad and ASB experiences, students need to submit the exact budget they provide. If you believe you need more funding than those budgets have listed you will need to provide explanations and evidence to support the increased budget request.
