Graduation Requirements

Graduation Requirements

Students are strongly encouraged to take a full schedule of classes each year so that they are better able to compete for seats at colleges and universities. At a minimum, the following course credit requirements must be successfully completed by every North Brunswick Township High School student to be eligible for graduation:

Core/Elective Course Requirements

** Class of 2019 and beyond.

** For the classes of 2018 or earlier: All college-bound students should take at least 10 credits in World Languages. Students interested in applying to competitive colleges should take 15-20 credits in World Languages. If a student in the class of 2018 or earlier chooses to take the minimum 5 credits in a World Language, s/he is required to take an additional 5 credits (on top of the 5 credit requirement) of courses offered through either the Fine Arts or Business departments—Visual and Performing Arts or Career Education and Consumer, Family and Life—totaling 10 credits.

The following courses fulfill the NBTHS 2.5 credit computer requirement:

Commercial Art, Integrated Computer Applications, Internet and Web Page Design, Keyboarding, Computers Made Easy, Advanced Computer Applications, Advanced Word Processing, Honors Web Publishing, Publication Layout and Design, Technical Drawing, CAD, Design Technology, Gaming & Animation, Architectural Design, Journalism, Yearbook, Intro to Computer Science, AP Computer Science.

All students must be scheduled for a minimum of 35 credits per year.

Total Credits Needed for Graduation: 120

State/District Testing

Students must demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics and in English by passing one of New Jersey's mandated assessment options or they will not be issued a diploma, regardless of academic achievement. All students will participate in PARCC assessments per NJDOE.

Explanation of Credits

* Students who are scheduled for 7 credit science classes must pair their lab class with a study hall.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

The GPA is computed by multiplying the numerical grade equivalent (A+ =4.3, A=4, A- =3.6, B+ =3.3, B=3, B- =2.6, C+ =2.3, C=2, C- =1.6, D=1, F=0) times the credits attempted and then divided by the total amount of credits attempted. Advanced Placement (AP) classes are given 1.0 higher numerical grade equivalent if the grade is at least a “C” or better (i.e., a B+ (3.3) would earn the GPA equivalent of 4.3). Honors (H) courses are given .5 higher numerical grade equivalent if the grade is at least a “C” or better (i.e., a B+ (3.3) would earn the GPA equivalent of 3.8). All graded subjects are counted in the averaging process.

Valedictorian/Salutatorian

The student with the highest grade point average (GPA) at the end of the 3rd quarter of the senior year will be the valedictorian. The student with the second highest average will be the salutatorian. Eligible student(s) must have attended North Brunswick Township High School for two (2) or more years.
