Physical Education & Health

The Health and Physical Education Program of the North Brunswick Township High School fosters the development of healthy attitudes and behaviors as well as promote a variety of physical activities designed to enhance fitness for all students. In accordance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, the program will: encompass health services, create a healthful environment and incorporate diverse health and physical education programs for students throughout the school year. The department focuses on the concepts of wellness, cooperation and teamwork to promote lifelong health and wellness. Our program addresses the needs of our students providing them with the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary to meet the challenges and demands of life.

All freshmen will participate in a "Personal Fitness" course (1MP), which provides each student with the tools to develop an individual optimum level of physical fitness, acquire knowledge of fitness concepts, and understand the significance of lifestyle on one’s health and fitness. PHYSICAL EDUCATION I 8015

HEALTH I  8115

This course stresses personal growth and development. An introductory unit on behavior and emotions discusses how emotions can affect behavior and various constructive, mature, coping methods. The family living unit develops factual knowledge about human sexuality as well as providing opportunities for discussion of important issues relevant to adolescence. Other areas of study include conflict resolution, bullying, communications and decision-making skills, contraception and sexually transmitted infections and drugs as they pertain to freshman health topics.

HEALTH II LAB/ DRIVER EDUCATION THEORY   8124

Driver Education offers students the opportunity to discuss good driving attitudes, which are essential for safe driving. The theory portion of driver education consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction. Some of the topics discussed in class are: New Jersey permits, insurance issues, the New Jersey school bus law, the New Jersey point system, defensive driving, rules of the road, seat belt use, alcohol, drugs and driving, attitudes and consideration of other drivers. There will also be a study of practical aspects of driving, such as parking and local traffic trouble spots. As a courtesy to our students the New Jersey State Driving Test will be given upon completion of the driver’s manual portion of the curriculum. Drug use, abuse, and addiction will also be covered extensively during this health course.

HEALTH III  8135

The junior health course covers all topics related to first aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator training, suicide prevention (as per state mandate), and nutrition. Students will learn appropriate methods for injury prevention and responding to a variety of emergencies, and have the opportunity to become CPR certified when a certified American Red Cross instructor teaches the course.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING/JUNIOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION 8725

This elective is a full year course and is available to juniors fulfilling the American Red Cross pre-requisites. Students must be at least 15 years of age, able to swim 500 yards using front crawl and breaststroke, surface dive and recover a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 foot depth, and swim 20 yards while carrying the brick. Students successfully completing this course will become a certified lifeguard, which includes Community First Aid and Safety and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications.

HEALTH IV 8145

This course provides an opportunity for students to develop and clarify knowledge and attitudes necessary to make mature decisions in today’s society. Common problems that one may face at various stages of the life cycle are presented and discussed. Relationships, date rape, domestic violence, pregnancy and childbirth, drugs as it pertains to senior health topics, responsible parenting, and future planning for the lifestyle of choice are just some of the topics that will be covered.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP  8735

This is a full-year elective course (by application only) for seniors. Students involved in Senior Leadership will be trained as facilitators for freshmen outreach sessions. Seniors will lead freshmen groups and address such topics as adjusting to change, academic achievement, communication, problem solving, time management, active listening, and prejudice reduction. Senior health and physical education activities will be interspersed throughout the year. There is a time commitment required for this course. Students must be able to attend a three-day overnight retreat in the spring and also attend freshman orientation.
