Learning Center

                    Please note that all courses listed are by Child Study Team Placement.

The Special Education Department provides a full continuum of services for students with unique learning needs who have been determined eligible by the Child Study Team.  The general education curriculum is followed with adaptations to allow learners the fullest access to general education possible.  

Services are provided in the following settings:  In- Class Resource, Replacement, and Self-Contained in mathematics, social studies, science, world language and English.  Descriptions for these courses can be found under their department headings. Some students are also placed in Adaptive Physical Education. 

In addition to high school courses, students, according to their needs, may also participate in Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Skills, individual counseling, group counseling. We added a full time UBHC Clinician to support the therapeutic needs of students in need.

Study Skills 9545

A class that provides academic support for students with an emphasis on self-advocacy, goal setting, organizational skills and study skills. Students will be supported in working toward their IEP goals. 

Specialized Reading 9575

In this class, a certified special education teacher works with students who are not reading at grade level. The teacher provides explicit reading instruction and monitors, measures and supports students in the areas of fluency and comprehension.

Theater Workshop 9515

Theater Workshop provides students with a variety of experiences in theater and drama. The course will focus on various aspects of theatrical production: acting, scene study, character examination, set design, lighting, make-up, costumes, and directing. Students will perform in front of the class; however, no prior experience is necessary.

Alternate Achievement Academy  (Self-contained BD program)

This program provides students with additional supports and supervision while pursuing grade-level, coursework. Students work toward individual and class goals as staff provide positive behavioral supports. The program afford students the opportunity to work and enjoy leisure activities in the community.

Students in this program will earn HS graduation requirements and electives (with the exception of Driver's Education) online through online software. The program also allows students to participate in credit recovery when possible to keep them on pace for graduation.

This program is supported by a Case Manager who provides individual and group counseling for students as needed for students and communicates continuously with the students, staff, families, and outside providers to help the

English I and II 9105

These English classes provide the foundation from which reading and writing skills are developed in this course. Writing assignments grow out of student discussions and involvement with the reading materials (classroom texts and outside readings). Student writing often serves as a basis for grammar lessons. Emphasis is placed on techniques to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner.   The course is modified from junior and senior general education English courses. Functional skills are infused in daily instruction. 

CBI English III and IV  9205

Topics in Pre-Algebra and Consumer Math 9115

These math courses help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.  The students are exploring topics in pre-algebra, probability and statistics, and mathematics as it applies to daily living. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner.   The courses emphasize functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

Topics in Geometry and Consumer Math 9215

These math courses help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.  The students are exploring topics in geometry, probability and statistics, and mathematics as it applies to daily living. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner.   The courses emphasize functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

Physical Science 9135

This course introduces high school students to the broad spectrum of science by integrating basic concepts in chemistry, physics, and earth and space science. This course addresses  Core Content Standards in Physical Science and Earth Systems. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner.   The courses emphasize functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

Life and Environmental Science 9235

Using a large-scale perspective, students will explore major themes of biology. Topics of study included are biochemistry, cells, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA and genetics. Through interactive lab work, students will investigate the basis of life and how living and nonliving factors work together in ecosystems. In addition to traditional classroom practices, technology-based projects will be incorporated to enhance student ability to process and display information in a variety of presentation formats. This course addresses the Core  Content Standards in Science Practices, Life Science and Earth Systems Science. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner. The course emphasizes functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

World History and Geography 9125

In these courses students explore the big ideas in US History and make connections to the current day.   Students will study the fabric of civilizations, the contributions of individuals, groups, institutions and ideas. This course is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner. These courses emphasize functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

US History I and II  9225

In these courses students explore the big ideas in US History and make connections to the current day.   Students will study the fabric of civilizations, the contributions of individuals, groups, institutions and ideas. This course is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. This course is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner. These courses emphasize functional skills that help students meet their IEP Goals and Objectives.

Life Skills I 9145

This course assists students with post-secondary plans including completing interest and career inventories, job fairs. and job shadowing. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year.

Life Skills II 9155

The course focuses on the development of functional communication, daily living and vocational skills and a required component is community-based instruction where students learn outside of the school in grocery stores, banks, and other community organizations and service providers. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year.

Careers I 9245

These courses assist students with post-secondary plans including completing interest and career inventories, job fairs. and job shadowing. The Transition Coordinator and Job Coaches work to develop and implement the transition plan in accordance with the IEP. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year.

Careers II 9255

This course provides students with an opportunity to acquire skills and experience in job settings. Job placements are individualized and job coaching is provided. The Transition Coordinator and Job Coaches work to develop and implement the transition plan in accordance with the IEP. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year.

Program Based Study Hall (no credits earned)

This study hall is supervised by program staff to allow for the unique needs of the learners to make up work and receive assistance from program staff. Students may use this time to complete work that they have missed due to absence.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Program (Self-contained ASD class)

 COURSE NOTE: All courses are by CST Placement only

This program has been developed for students with Autism with the principles of ABA in mind. ABA, or Applied Behavior Analysis, is simply the application of behavioral principles, to everyday situations that will,over time increase or decrease targeted behaviors. ABA has been used to help individuals acquire many different skills, such as language skills, self-help skills, and play skills; in addition, these principles can help decrease maladaptive behaviors such as aggression, self-stimulatory behaviors, and self-injury. 

                      Multiple Disabilities Program (Self-contained MD class)

This program has been developed for students with multiple disabilities who require individualized programs to meet their educational needs.  The principles of ABA are used to support students academic, social and behavioral needs. 

The following courses are offered to students in the ASD and MD programs:

Functional Language Arts and Communication

In this course students develop skills in pre-reading, beginning research skills, phonemic awareness, sight words, language concepts, reading comprehension, and independent reading skills. In this course students develop skills in pre-writing, functional writing, creating a piece of writing, and typing from models. Students will have exposure to American Sign Language as well.

Functional Mathematics and Personal Finance

In this course, students develop skills in number sense, counting, numerical operations, money skills, telling time, measurement, and using schedules and calendars,and money, The application of skills will be practiced during Community Based Instruction

Functional Science and Social Studies

In this course, students learn about physical, life and environmental science concepts that are linked to general education curricula with a focus on functional skills. Students also learn about varius cultures/ celebrations, basics in US History and geography. 

Daily Living and Health

In this course, students develop skills in hygiene and personal grooming, medical care and treatment, eating, toileting, dressing self, health and wellness,  and personal safety. In this course students develop skills in cooking and household chores. Students will also learn about personal safety and health. 

Life Skills

This course assists students with post-secondary plans including completing interest and career inventories, job fairs. and job shadowing. The course is designed to be taken for more than one year

Careers 

In this course, students develop pre-vocational and vocational skills.

  18-21 Self Contained  Program

This is a program for students who have met their graduation requirements and have a continued need to work to develop vocational and life skills. The program's purpose is to assist students toward greater independence after high school and to be prepared for paid employment. Much of the focus in these programs is the application of skills during community-based instruction.  A substantial part of the day is spent off-site as students work toward independence in the community.
