English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language program provides multilingual students with the opportunity to obtain the communication skills needed to develop proficiency in each area of language arts. Additionally, academic support is offered to students to assist in their acclimation to their mainstream subjects. A district-approved standardized test is administered upon entry and twice yearly to monitor each student’s individual progress.

Literacy for Newcomers 0924

This course will focus on developing foundational literacy skills that will help to further the student's academic learning. Literacy skills will range from phonological awareness to the formation of letters, to the tasks of reading and writing. Included will be instruction in culturally appropriate non-verbal communication, greetings and farewells, basic social skills, school conduct, courtesies, etc. Critical "survival" vocabulary will be emphasized along with the introduction of key academic language. This course will provide a basic literacy foundation for multilingual learners so they can navigate their immediate environment and meet the demands of the literacy skills required in ESL Beginners and beyond.

Spanish Language Arts for Heritage Speakers 0978

This course will build on students' existing Spanish language skills and further develop their biliteracy.  Through course content, students will take pride in their language and culture as Spanish speakers.  They will think critically and reflect on their identity as Latinos in the United States in order to be better equipped to advocate for themselves.

ESL BEGINNER 0945

This course is designed for small group instruction to support Beginner Multilingual Learners to improve their English proficiency in the WIDA-aligned domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The content of the course consists of required whole-class instruction, practice, and assessments in conjunction with individualized performance tasks necessary to improve deficiencies in basic skill areas identified from the student’s ESL placement test. Oral and written communication are developed through immersive English strategies and TPR. Although students in this course are all Multilingual Learners, they demonstrate a wide spectrum of skill abilities; therefore, the course is structured to identify individual strengths and weaknesses and move students along the continuum listed in the standards toward advanced ESL courses. This particular course is purposefully structured to allow for small group work and individual attention from the teacher to maximize skill acquisition and student engagement in beginner Multilingual Learners.

ESL CP Algebra I  2125

ESL CP Algebra I is a college-preparatory course encompassing functions and their graphs, algebraic concepts, solving and graphing linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, and factoring quadratics, exponents and exponential equations. Problem solving, calculator applications and applications of abstract concepts will provide students with a strong base to continue the study of higher level mathematics.  A TI-84 plus graphing calculator is highly recommended.

This is a college preparatory course that surveys the basic concepts of physics, such as mechanics, gravitation, momentum, light, electricity and magnetism. Frequent laboratory exercises and computer simulations are used to enhance and explore classroom concepts. This course helps to build a solid foundation in math and graphing skills for the student to grasp the scientific laws and problems involved in this course.  This course addresses the Next Generation Science Standards by exploring Physical, Engineering and Earth & Space science practices.

This is a college preparatory course designed to acquaint students with the foundation of chemistry. Laboratory experience is an integral part of the course. This course addresses the Next Generation Science Standards by exploring Physical, Engineering and Earth & Space science practices.

World History and Cultures is an examination of Western and non-Western history. It specifically aims at the major historical events from the early 1400s to the present. World History will focus on: how people have sought and still seek to meet their basic needs through a variety of economic systems; how people have pursued security through various political institutions; and how humanity has transmitted knowledge and culture through the centuries. In summary, this course will study the fabric of civilizations, and the contributions of individuals, groups, institutions, and ideas. This course is aligned with the NJSLS.

United States History I encompasses the period from the early colonial developments of the American continent through President Andrew Jackson’s administration. Along with the emphasis of US History, there will be segments with a focus on the developments within the State of New Jersey. A strong emphasis is placed on skills necessary to study history. These skills include note-taking, critical thinking, and analyzing facts and opinions. This course is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.

This course is a small group class designed to improve reading to a standard American English level in support of ESL transition into mainstream English courses. The course is meant to act as a direct resource for Grade 9-12 ESL students who have shown deficiencies indicated by the results of the NJSLA Assessment and/or previous subject-area performance indicators. The content of the course consists of required whole-class instruction, practice, and assessments in conjunction with individualized NJSLS performance tasks necessary to improve deficiencies in basic skill areas identified from the student’s ESL Personalized Learning Plan. This program focuses on the improvement of narrative, argumentative, and informational reading skills through work with both short works and novels.
