World Languages

The World Language Department offers courses ranging from beginning to Advanced Placement French, German, Italian and Spanish. The Department also offers four years of study of Spanish for Heritage speakers culminating in Advanced Placement Spanish. The North Brunswick Township Board of Education requires all students to successfully complete ten credits of World Language study as a graduation requirement. Students who plan to attend competitive colleges or universities are encouraged to take a minimum of three years of the same language.

The Department also offers a variety of extra-curricular activities including clubs and induction into National World Language Honor Societies in each of the four languages. Candidates for acceptance into any of the World Language Honor Societies must maintain an A average in the World Language and meet any other requirements as determined by that language’s national organization. Extra-curricular Language Club membership is not limited to students of that language.

Seton Hall University’s Project Acceleration affords high school students the opportunity to earn college credits for courses taken in their own secondary schools. These courses, accepted by over 130 colleges and universities nationwide, have provided students with a firm foundation for future success as well as a head start on their college studies. Seton Hall University grants 3 credits per semester to students successfully completing these courses.

COLLEGE PREP FRENCH I

CP French I introduces students to the language and civilization of France and French-speaking countries. The course is designed to develop basic skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of the life, culture and civilization of the French-speaking world.

COLLEGE PREP GERMAN I

CP German I introduces students to the language and civilization of Germany and German-speaking countries. The course is designed to develop basic skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of the life, culture and civilization of the German-speaking world.

COLLEGE PREP ITALIAN I

CP Italian I introduces students to the language and civilization of Italy. The course is designed to develop basic skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of Italian life, culture and civilization.

COLLEGE PREP SPANISH I

CP Spanish I introduces students to the language and civilization of Spain and Latin America. The course is designed to develop accelerated introductory skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of the life, culture and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPANISH I A

Spanish I A introduces students to the language and civilization of Spain and Latin America. The course is designed to develop basic skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of the life, culture and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world. This course covers the content equivalent to the first semester of CP Spanish I over the span of one year.

SPANISH IB

Spanish IB introduces students to the language and civilization of Spain and Latin America. The course is designed to develop basic skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides an introduction to elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as an appreciation of the life, culture and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world. This course covers the content equivalent to the second semester of CP Spanish I over the span of one year.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH (Not running)

Conversational Spanish affords students who have successfully completed Spanish II or CP Spanish II the opportunity to continue their study of the Spanish language and culture. The course is based on thematic units with a focus on conversation within a culturally relevant context. In addition, students will expand their vocabulary and refine their grammatical skills. After successful completion of the course, student may continue their study in CP Spanish III.

Honors German IV gives students the opportunity to develop facility in spoken and written German and explore contemporary German literature and civilization. This course is conducted entirely in French and emphasizes vocabulary development, refinement exercises to improve pronunciation and oral fluency, and an intensive review of all grammatical structures. Cultural topics related to France and French-speaking countries will be discussed via newspapers, magazines, films and selected literary works. There will be practice in expository writing and students are expected to demonstrate a high level of oral participation. Integrated into this course will be concentrated practice in developing the skills required on the Advanced Placement language examination.

There will be practice in expository writing and students are expected to demonstrate a high level of oral participation. Integrated into this course will be concentrated practice in developing the skills required on the Advanced Placement language examination.

Cultural topics related to Spain and Spanish-speaking countries will be discussed via newspapers, magazines, films and selected literary works. There will be practice in expository writing and students are expected to demonstrate a high level of oral participation. Integrated into this course will be concentrated practice in developing the skills required on the Advanced Placement language examination.

SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS I

This course is designed to enhance and enrich primarily the reading and writing skills of native speakers of Spanish. Vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, conversation and writing skills will be emphasized. Students will also discuss cultural topics pertinent to the Hispanic World. This course is intended for students who can understand and speak the language and have satisfactory skills in reading and writing Spanish.

HONORS SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS II

This second-year course is designed to expand native speakers’ skills primarily in reading comprehension and written expression as well as further discussion about select Spanish-speaking cultures. Abridged works of literature and thematic conversational topics will be presented. After successful completion of Spanish for Native Speakers II, and with departmental recommendation, students may enroll in Spanish for Native Speakers III or Advanced Placement Spanish Language.

HONORS SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS III

This third-year course is designed to expand native speakers’ skills primarily in reading comprehension and written expression as well as further discussion about select Spanish-speaking cultures. Abridged works of literature and thematic conversational topics will be presented. After successful completion of Spanish for Native Speakers III, and with departmental recommendation, students may enroll in Advanced Placement Spanish Language.
