Phenomena

To start the year off, we learned about phenomena around the world. A phenomenon is an unusual event that leaves question. The G&T squad learned why these unusual events occurred. Some events we studied were the Blood Moon or Northern Lights. With the help of Mrs. Simovitch, our art teacher, we were able to create models displaying the phenomena. During late September through early October, we studied zombies and identified whether or not they were living or nonliving. We studied the characteristics of living things and nonliving things and brought it upon the zombies. Some identified it as living, while others chose non-living, since there was no wrong answer. Our most recent project were zines, made from folding paper. We picked a known place and researched its ecosystem. Students picked ecosystems in Egypt, Mesopotamia or Greece. We researched the climate and other factors. For the cover page we drew our ecosystem, each page also included information on our ecosystem. We even made imaginary organisms fit for our environment. We drew sketches of them and made an organizer with different adaptations and information. We started to make 3-D models of our specimen with clay and other materials brought from home like pipe cleaners and feathers. We’ve learned a lot in science, but we still have more to discover.

Owl Pallets

We are now dissecting owl pallets. Many of us have discovered ribs and skulls in the pallets. We all came to a conclusion that owls swallow their prey whole. We came to this conclusion because when we studied the animal bones, most of the bones were not broken. This would show us that the owl didn't chew up it's prey and just swallowed it whole.
