Introduction

During this marking period The gifted and talented 5th graders have done a variety of things. We have gone from adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimal to adding and subtracting fractions. Now we are working on a new project called Shark Tank. In this newsletter you will learn more about these topics so stay tuned to learn more...

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing Decimals

The first thing we learned this marking period was decimals. We got into decimals by doing a couple of challenge tasks just to see our level of knowledge on adding and subtracting decimals, just to let you know it was great! Then we did research on how to multiply and divide decimals. We did flipgrids to explain what we knew on the multiplication and division of decimals. We also did slides independently, explaining the process of our video and explanation, and then united them as a class( the slides). We also completed a packet where we had to research how to divide decimals in different ways. For example models, number lines, etc., finish the packet and then go over it, that was also great.-Dyandra Peralta

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Adding and Subtracting Fractions
This is a topic we are currently learning more about and so far we are doing well in this topic. Adding fractions was challenging in the way of making our brains think but at the same time great since we understood it. Our methods that we used were area models and standard algorithm. We did challenge tasks to test our knowledge of the topic first. We will then continue discussing this topic with our class as well as some groups as we learn more. This hopefully will lead up to multiplying and dividing fractions. -Christo G
HyperDocs and Flipgrid
So around December we were introduced to a new and fun way of learning, Hyperdocs and Flip Grids. Let's start with Hyperdocs, Hyperdocs are online documents that are sort of like a whole lesson on one small document that provides different tasks, math challenges, and links to help with learning. Like I said before it is sort of like a whole Math class online. We really enjoyed it and it really helped with adding and subtracting decimals. Another website was Flipgrid, a video creator in which you can record yourself. We used Flipgrid for a project on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals, as well as for homework . It worked by our math teacher creating an online class in which we were giving assignments and would post videos to complete the work. It was a really fun and interesting way to learn as well as presenting.-Rodger Vasquez
Shark Tank
A project we are currently working on is called Shark Tank. This project was inspired by the tv show called “Shark Tank.” This project includes Math, Humanities, Science, and Art! In math we are going to learn about marketing and how to advertise the invention to get the word out by brainstorming marketing ideas. We are going to calculate the cost by estimating cost of the creation based on the supplies and on the price we will estimate a profit for the first year. The Shark Tank project will be hard but it will be fun, and it will prepare us for our future presentations.-Daisy Kamara
Conclusion
Without a doubt we are growing and learning everyday alongside our teachers. With their help we can make a difference. This is what we have learned during our experience in G&T 5th Grade math throughout the second quarter.
