Introduction

Dear Parents and guardians, throughout this marking period the 5th grade has been working on varieties of things in science. You may be wondering what we did, as you read you will learn about the water cycle, Carbon dioxide, our ecosystem story and earth spheres.

Water Cycle

The water cycle is a cycle that repeats. It consists of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and groundwater runoff. Evaporation is an important part of the cycle, just like every other part. Evaporation is when ground water evaporates into the clouds due to the sun’s rays, turning it into Water Vapor. Then comes Condensation. This part is when the water vapor turns into water in the clouds. Now precipitation is when it rains. It also depends about the weather so it can be hail, snow, or rain. Water drops fall from the clouds onto the earth’s ground. Last but not least groundwater runoff is the flow of water into the ocean. Sometimes you can find puddles after a rainy day and then again since it is a cycle, it repeats. The Water Cycle also can relate to the Earth’s Spheres.

Co2 Cycle

So the co2 cycle is when a co2 molecule goes around different places and turns into different things. So for an example of one is a co2 molecule inside of a piece of grass and then a cow eats up that grass then the cow dies or poops it out and it is in the ground then it might turn into a mineral then it may be used by a car for fuel. Now it is in the air and then it keeps going on. In science there was this activity that we did for two days. So what happened was that we had a virtual dice and 6 stations they were surface water, minerals, soil, plants, animals, and atmosphere. So there was a paper and you roll the dice and depending on what number you get it says on the paper where your co2 molecule goes. This also relates to the Earth spheres because the sphere in the co2 cycle are atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.

Ecosystem story

The 5th grade has been working on a story based on a biome each of the students chose. We have been working on an introduction for the story, and pages like how plants and animals get energy from the biome, and also describe the food chain, how energy flows throughout this animals. We did not just learn about energy but photosynthesis. We are in the process of identifying a problem in our ecosystem with a partner. We are creating an invention to help this problem. This project includes different subjects like math, humanities and art.

Earth’s Spheres

Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere (lithosphere), and Atmosphere. This is what makes up the Earth. The Atmosphere is the air around us. In other words, it is space, air, and any gases around the Earth. The Geosphere is the ground on Earth. The land is part of the Geosphere, meaning hills, mountains, and many other landforms. The hydrosphere is the water on, under, and around the Earth. Biosphere is the life on Earth, such as us humans, plants, and animals. They all interact, of course, and we had to give examples, such as the water cycle; all of the spheres interact.

Conclusion

As you can tell our 5th grade is working hard to achieve their goal, we are “learners not finishers.” To conclude we hope you enjoyed our 2nd Quarter newsletter, just know this is not the end but the beginning of our journey.
