FAQs

1. Can I change my instrument after the first four months?

Generally the answer is NO! Care should be taken in choosing the instrument that you want to learn. Students are not allowed to change their instrument once lessons get started unless there is an extenuating circumstance. (Lack of practice does not count.) Scheduling and progress make up a large portion of what can be done during lesson time. There have been times when students who practice consistantly have moved to another instrument after catching up with the other group while keeping up with their first choice.

2. What instrument is the hardest one to start out with?

The flute is usually one that is the hardest to start. This is because of the way that the sound is made on the instrument. Once a student masters the beginning sounds the rest of the instrument technique is just about the same as all of the other instruments.

3. Can I play an instrument if I have braces?

Yes, definitely! Braces can have wax put on them if necessary in the beginning of the year. Most students find that the braces do not interfere with their learning to play. If this is a concern, the Violin or Percussion instruments are a possibility.

4. How often do I have to practice, and for how long?

You should practice a minimum of 15 minutes a day, six days a week in order to be successful. Without this committment you will not be able to play the instrument of your choice.

5. What if I have a different instrument other than those mentioned here?

I can teach just about any instrument that you have at home. The bagpipes are the exception to that however. If you have a different instrument that you want to play let me know and I will see what can be done. Please remember that we can not teach guitar or piano at this time in school though.

6. Can I use my own instrument instead of renting?

Yes, if you have one at home you can use it instead of renting one from a music company or store. I only ask that you bring it in so that I can check it out before lessons start. Sometimes when an instrument sits in a closet for a while it needs a "tune up" before a beginner can use it.

7. What is the best instrument to start on?

Of course, the answer to that is the one instrument that you really want to do!
